Its a code for the way the TV translates the electrical signals...and of course the number of vertical and horizontal lines in the monitors, here in america we use something called NTSC and in Europe like other parts of the world use PAL...

here it is comething to make it clearer...

"NTSC

NTSC stands for National Television System Committee, which devised the NTSC television broadcast system in 1953. NTSC is also commonly used to refer to one type of television signal that can be recorded on various tape formats such as VHS, 3/4" U-matic and Betacam.

The NTSC standard has a fixed vertical resolution of 525 horizontal lines stacked on top of each other, with varying amounts of "lines" making up the horizontal resolution, depending on the electronics and formats involved. There are 59.94 fields displayed per second. A field is a set of even lines, or odd lines. The odd and even fields are displayed sequentially, thus interlacing the full frame. One full frame, therefore, is made of two interlaced fields, and is displayed about every 1/30 of a second.

NTSC countries are: USA, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Burma, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Greenland, Guam, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, St. Kitts, Saipan, Samoa, Surinam, Taiwan, Tobago, Trinidad, Venezuela, Virgin Islands.

-------------------------------------

PAL

PAL stands for Phase Alternation by Line, and was adopted in 1967. It has 625 horizontal lines making up the vertical resolution. 50 fields are displayed and interlaced per second, making for a 25 frame per second system. An advantage of this system is a more stable and consistent hue (tint). PAL-M is used only in Brazil. It has 525 lines, at 30 frames per second.

PAL countries include: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina (PAL-N), Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brunei, Cameroon, Canary Islands, China, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Gibralter, Greece (also SECAM), Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, North Korea, Kuwait, Liberia, Luxembourg (also SECAM), Madeira, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay (PAL-N), Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia (also SECAM), Siera Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Uruguay (PAL-N), Yeman (the former Yeman Arab Republic was PAL, and the former People's Democratic Republic of Yeman was NTSC ), Yugoslavia, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Yeah...you are a real PAL!

Its a shame the use of codes...that let me down the chance of buying F12005 while I was in Europe...it was of course made for PAL code. :(

This world should globalyze this stuff

They will not be able to merge the two, it means throwing out equipment from one of the formats. With DVD's they are trying to get to one format for global distrubution, but it does not look good right now.

In fighting among both sides. Many companies are now supporting both formats and new shows can usually be purchased in either format.

Lets hope the new DVD formats will merge into one for all our sakes....

from your description ecap, it sounds as if PAL is the better of the two as pal has the higher frame rate. I never understood why there are ntsc and pal, and why they couldn't just have one universal format. Is it anything to do with the voltage diference do you know?

VHS and BETA did spring to my mind.

Although globalisation may be good, it would also get rid of a lot of individuality which may be harmful to societies. The introduction of huge corporate chains such as macdonalds all over the world has lead to a decline in business in the local resteraunts which can destroy a local community.

They certainly do in the western economies. I am not so sure in the less developed economies like India, Mexico etc. its not so easy to undercut prices there.

taxes I am pretty sure are less than england. fuel is darn cheap too, so are cars. but the welfare system isnt too great, public transport sucks (atleast in sydney). the weather wont be pleasant for you coming from england.
