Kay 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2006 In my experience women often do and its becoming clear that its one of the main reasons women earn less than men. Take some advice from typically confident/arrogant men like myself and Dan, if you don't believe in your abilities no one else will. Actually, why don't you let us men walk all over you like earlier generations of women have!Men rule! Now this is where your confidence and assumption makes you very wrong. The reason behind my lack of self belief is due to a factor that is much more common in males than females. Asperger Syndrome is up to ten times more common in males than in females. Source I do not let "men walk all over me" and in my experience at least, it is those confident, arrogant, manipulative men which have actually been landed in a whole load of trouble, so I'll refrained from taking your advice. Max Mosley 2 Report post Posted October 2, 2006 Oh I didn't know Asperger Syndrome caused low self-belief. Thanks for telling me. Nevertheless, as my link demonstrates, women do generally have much lower self-belief than men and thus allow men to "walk all over them" in the workplace. My advice that you should believe in yourself is surely sound advice for anyone. Given that you know you have low self-belief but an extremely high IQ is it difficult to change your level of self-belief to something more realistic? Btw you come across simply as a very clever young woman; if you hadn't told me about AS or low self-belief I never would have known.
Kay 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2006 Thanks. It's something I work on in individual situations and circumstances when I need the high self belief / confidence e.g. in presentations and I can have enough confidence for short periods of time, but I doubt I'll ever feel constantly strong minded about myself, but it has pluses as well as negatives. Means a lot of people underestimate me, but it comes back to bite them in the long run. There is a clear line though, between confident and arrogant and I hope I never am the later. Asperger Syndrome normally causes low confidence because of the communication problems / setbacks those with it face. As a "normal" (hate the term myself) individual has basic innate communication skills, which we must try to learn and it's almost an impossible job, as every situation is different and requires you to adapt to it. Adapting is something hard to do when you prefer routines and big changes in those causes distress. Obviously, there are different severities to AS, so it effects individuals differently, some will have more self belief than others, but some aspects can be helped. I did a presentation last year in front of a group of students and got almost full marks for it, because I had prepared and researched OTT which had given me more confidence for the time I was doing the presentation. So basically, someone trying to mark some kind of control over me, because they see me as an easy target, motivates me to do something about it.
