Future of F1 to become very boring

Recommended Posts

:x

Max Mosley wants to reduce the costs of F1, therefore he wants to have only 1 tyre company running the show. It is because of having 2 tyre companies that the teams spend so much money going to the tracks to test the tyres.

How boring will F1 be with all the cars using the same tyres?

The use of one tyre brand has been used a lot of times in F1, and I dont think that it could be a reason for boring races.

But, I think that having 2 or even 3 brands brings competition, obtaining better tyres that maybe you will be using in your street car someday.

So, for my point of view, the best thing is have a pair of tyres brands fighting to be the best of them, as there are 10 teams with different chassis, engines, aerodynamics...this is F1....this is technical fight!

greetings from mexico city.

I think you may well be mistaken!

its not a technical fight anymore. That was 15 years ago, the technical fight. The new road cars are FAR more intergrated and technical. All F1 does is copy the manufactuers road technology.

The last big inavation was semi-automatic boxes that was developed in f1 first. everything is copied.

You have to see sport like this its F1 Vs premiership Football or Nascar. Not ferrari vs arsenal!! F1 has to understand that its the product we buy. and the product need to more entertaining. F1 has to keep jordan and minardi afloat because they make up 1/10 of f1. firstly they are no less as important as Ferrari.... if they wernt at the back, and teams had to has three cars etc to make the numbers up then could find toyota or a renault on the back row. secondly, by thinking of F1 as a whole product and evening up the moneies.... well maybe not evening up the monies but lessing the impact of running 10,000miles testing will cut cost and make it more entertaining. because the smaller budgets could make a greater impact.

a thought, maybe f1 supermo bernie should take a more active roll in helping all the teams with money and getting sponourship LIKE happens in nascar....

i think competition is always a good thing, and there are many for and against arguments for having a single tyre manufacturer. the most obvious one meaning the performance of the chassis and engine will be emphasised over the performance of the tyres in different conditions.

but having more than one supplier also means that in changeable conditions a lesser team can surprise with their performance and really shake up the grid. this kind of unpredictability is also what the sport needs, bacause the more controlled the tyre is, the more controlled are the variables, and the more predictable the races.

so i've gotta say that whilst a good chassis/engine package may be disadvantaged at one or two races a year from a supposedly inferior tyre (and this would no doubt be frustrating for that team - see bar last year), it also means that you have less predictable races for the fans.

i especially loved it last year when the lesser bridgestone teams started to fire up in changeable conditions! such variety will be lost with a control tyre. so there needs to be at least 2 tyre manufacturers in f1.

Forget all the arguments about how to reduce the costs in F1. None of the major (manufacturer) teams are ever going to agree to spend less on each car than they do now. Max is whistling dixie if he thinks they will.

The best answer is this. F1 budgets are now so extreme that no manufacturer could contemplate spending more than their current 2004 provisions (the shareholders, already nervous, would go completely nuts - lets face it, $1billion dollars a season to go motor racing?...PUHLEESE!!).

Max should make it compulsory for all manufacturer teams to run 4 cars immediately. This would have the instant effect of lowering the spend per car.

The independant teams could continue to run 2 cars and also have the right to compulsory purchase the previous seasons manufacturer chassis. This would lower the cost of development for the independants and make it possible for new teams to break into the top echelon.

Thats the cash taken care of.

Now to the spectacle:

Have 1 tyre supplier immediately. Go Back to slicks. Increase the width. Allow differential tyre sizes ie smaller at the front. No private tyre development for individual teams.

Mandate single element front wings.

Mandate the use of mechanical clutches.

Too easy!

That will sort out the men from the boys!

:? :?

But I have heard the top men in F1 say this year, that the F1 2004 season will be decided by the tyres. According to a lot of them, if Schummie has problems with the tyres, he will not be able to win 2004.

If tyres are so important, that the six times champion , might loose because of them, then why want all the teams to have the same tyres.?

Isnt that going to take away some of the competition?

I would like to see a few more teams enter inot F!, so we can have grids of 24 or 26. With only 20 cars running at the start all we need is a good pile up at the start and we are left watching 10 or so cars go around, whooppee doo!!

I think CART is a better spectacle at present because the cars are so similar...same chasis, same engine and same tyres. It then proves which IS the better driver and not just in the Better machinery. Its much easier to win in a car that has a budget of $500 M pa than in a car with resources of $60M pa surely it is!! Money buys horsepower

Some chassis designs shine on different circuits. If the team gets to that circuit and their tyres don't work there that may their only chance of a result gone.

But you are right Marina one tyre maqnufacturer would make F1 boring, remember how boring 1986, 1994 and 1997 for example where.

PS. I know Goodyear where not the only tyres in 86 and 97, but may as well have been thay suppiled ALL the top teams.

well to be honest I am not sure WHERE F1 is heading these days !!

Once upon a time F1 was the development areana for Normal road cars, i.e. disk brakes, radial tyres etc etc .. but somehow these days all that is lost.

Road cars now have 35% tyre wall profile tyres, F1 um I stand corrected but I think 70 % ??

Road cars like the $1 million Mclaren / merc has ELECTRONIC brakes with Ceramic Disks.. Oh and of course the very Standard, not optional, ABS braking system on all but the very basic road cars, still outlawed in F1!!!

Seems to me F1 has " LOST THE PLOT" in development technology that will get passed down to Joe Blow Motorist.. just my 2 cents worth

i can see how in theory that reduces the p/unit cost of the cars if you keep the budget constant.

but come on mate, you can't seriously think that preparing 4 cars per race isn't going to increase the cost for the teams? what if you had 2, or even 3 or all 4 crash in a single race. the potential costs would be blow the budgets out of teh water. having sato in his rookie season couldn't even end up costing a team so much!

Tyres nearly cost M$ the title in 2003. If he were on Michelins we would have had a repeat of 2002, with him winning easily, but probably not by Magny Cours. Bridgestone needed one wet/dry race towards the end of the season, and they got it in Indy. This along with other circumstances played nicely into Ferrari's hands and they took full advantage of it. I don't think Michelin will dominate as much this year. Last year's heatwave in Europe was unprecedented and it would take another one for Michelin to have the same advantage in the dry, otherwise the gap may be reduced. By how much? Well we'll see come Malaysia, where its bound to be hot there!!

Taku,

I can see your point, but that's just it! No major team will be able to raise a bigger budget than they have now. The manufacturers are already finding it difficult to justify their budgets to the shareholders. The possibility of even Ferrari being able to spend more is non existant. The Fiat group (whose viability under a questionable debt load will come under enormous scutiny following the Parmalat debacle and it will certainly have to reduce its Ferrari budget over the next five years.)

Max should make it sooner ('05).
