Taku

new qualifying

Recommended Posts

ok, i can't seem to find another thread on this, but i was offline for the whole w/e so i don't know if it's been done already.

what did everyone think of the new system?

media and teams seem to hate it. you can understand why the team bosses hate it, in the end they're risk-averse in this regard.

some of the quali reports i read last night were really funny. like "no one knows what to write cos no-one actually knows what's going on" etc etc.

this one i particularly liked --> http://www.grandprix.com/race/r714qreport.html

should it be scrapped? if so, what's likely? richards tossed up the idea of 30 min banzai and then a 1 hour 2003 session..

out-there ideas are welcomed, bearing in mind the 1-engine rule.

In one word, BORING, bring back the old school qualifying mixed with this new one. I say they only get 1 flyer as current but on quali fuel, not race fuel, that way pole will mean something.

i honestly think david richard's suggestion should be taken up by the bosses for sepang. you'd have the chaotic of old for 1/2 an hour on friday, so the really fast cars get a good position in the final run on sat, which would be the new one-lap format. best of both worlds!

and shaun, don't dismiss it purely cos it's a richard's idea eh! :P  :D

Richards idea is actually the one I like most of the new ideas, but most I'd like it if the whole system was reverted back to 96-02 style, 12-lap shoot-out with none of the silly race set-up in qualifying rules. One engine, OK, but qualifying setups and qualifying fuel loads must make a return.

the 1 lap idea is the greatest thing from the last 2 years. i don't want toee this 12 lapsand an hour to do what u want, back. I thinkthat they should revert to last years system.

i can understand why they made the changes last year to spice up the grid, but back-to-back sessions? very very fishy that they'd do this and now, after everyone realised how boring it is, disagree with it and say "who me? it wasn't my idea". the lengths they'll go to to disadvantage the smaller teams is beyond me. max should never have let this happen i reckon. ultimately it's his responsibility to keep these dodgy bosses and their tactics in check.

i say give richard's idea the go-ahead for sepang.

i remember someone saying a while back they should make the driver's run out to their cars like in the old days at the start of the session. now that'd be a laugh!

You're right! Max should never have let this happen. But doesn't a change like this need unanimous backing from all the team owners as well? Me personally, I like the idea of 12 laps in an hour for the first session and revert to single lap (with race setup and fuel) for qualifying proper.

Does this mean that the Australian Idol 2004 auditioners now get a second chance when d#cko tells them their s##t ...... " Shi Bangs , she bangs , o babi ya shi muvs muvs " .

LMAO at Taku theory of running out to car for qualifying , only problem is that Ferrari will design some interstellar boot for Shuey and sink $200billion into it so that it is frictionless and he gets an extra 4 seconds quicker time to the car .

By the way , 2 chance qualifying sucks .

i think they should just have the 1 qualifying session on saturday... 1 lap rule. theres no major need for 2...just go on champ positions.

like australians would care...we only see them qualify once all season....

anyway like seeing them for an extra lap really makes a difference. there is no need for the 1st qual session.....its a waste of time and money.

why bother with qualifying at all !!!

Just get the teams to supply their HONEST BUDGET for the years racing, the highest budget gets F............g pole !!!

seems how it works now anyway so why polute the atmosphere with all those exhaust gases :-)

um.. "tongue in Cheek " ok  :x

LOL, now why would I do such a thing  I say bring back last years system. It worked well after everyone adjusted to it. Back to back sessions is way way too long and boring. Last years was perfect, plus it put a lot of interest in Fridays, which this year, due to the one engine a weekend rule will return to being the cure for insomnia it used to be. DR's idea makes sense, but I can't see it happening.

hey it wasn't my idea! it was someone else's, probly juany's.

but i can't see anything wrong with richard's idea, it'd go down great. it provides the excitement of banzai quali + the teethgrinding suspense and pressure of 1-lap quali. with the banzai you please the purists and top teams, and the 1-lap gives the opportunity for a grid shake-up. everyone wins imo.

but shaun makes a good point, either way now fridays sux a## big time due to the 1 engine rule. but if you have 30min or 1hr of banzai, at least the 3rd drivers get a go at light fuel testing.. or will they just concentrate on race set-up??

If all the aim of keep messing around with qualifying is to spice up the grid, why not do away with qualifying and just start in reverse order of what they finished in the previous race!

now that's what i'm talkin about. a minardi front row at every race baby!

That would certainly make Sunday more interesting but I very much doubt the big team bosses will ever allow a rule change like that to occur. It would undoubtedly make the racing better though!

Would make Monaco and the race beforehand VERY interesting. the race before, everyone will want to come last so that they are on the front at the principality. would love to see Minardi in front there, they may actually have a chance at some big points.

From Planetf1.com:

Max's poodles approve qualifying changes

24/03/04

The FIA announced on Wednesday that the World Motorsport Council (sometimes known as Max Mosley's poodles) have approved the changes to the qualifying format, which were released last week.

As of next weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix the first of the two single-lap qualifying runs will take place at 13h00, an hour earlier than usual. Although the second qualifying session will be held after the first, it won't begin immediately, instead it will start at 14h00.

This has been done to give the teams a bigger gap between the two shoot-outs as well as giving television broadcasters a fixed schedule.

To accommodate the changes to qualifying, Saturday's other two sessions, free practice three and four, will be held one hour earlier.

revolutionary! where do they come up with such ground breaking ideas/changes.

under the new qualifying system there would have been a 1 minute break between the 2 sessions instead of tehm being back-to-back. now that's change for you..

and max's poodles, i like that! :D and it would be true too if max wasn't the one being played with..

What exactly was wrong with last years qualifying format that made them change it for this year anyway?

probably the fact it was successful. If anything is successful, they've gotta complain about it one way or another.
