"Schumacher has said he does not want to do anything bad or for anything bad to happen in this race, so I just hope that is what happens for his sake - but this shows how far Ferrari are prepared to go to help Michael win this Championship."
JV - Oct 25, 1997 - after Saturday Practice in the final round of the 1997 championship at Jerez, Spain. The next day would prove just how far Schumi was willing to go...................

Moved to Historical F1.

"You just don't mess with Jacques Villeneuve" - Murray Walker, 1997 Hungarian GP.
"When Jacques was with us, he was a very aggressive driver, fiercely competitive, mentally hard as nails. Very quick with it, very gifted. A bright fellow, undoubtedly, very intelligent. He was an absolutely born racing driver - look at the way he'd bang wheels with Michael, pass people on the outside, that kind of thing" -Sir Frank Williams on Jacques Villeneuve
"This year, with BMW, JV's going very well, and I'm pleased for him. Whether or not he'll get a drive next year I don't know, but I hope he does, he's an unusual, and very strong addition to the F1 community. A character." - Sir Frank Williams again on Jacques Villeneuve
The Nojvnof1 2006 driver lineup - Jacques Villeneuve, Nico Rosberg, Christian Klein, Scott Speed.

The legend surrounding Gilles is mainly down to his courage. It's curious to think that, would have Gilles raced today, his crash prone attitude wouldn't have guaranteed him a seat in F.1 for too long.Back in the '80s there was less pressure to perform in the short term for the drivers and many talents came out after years of racing in the grand prixes, like Niki Lauda.Imagine if BRM had dropped Lauda after few races just because he was underperforming because of his unexperience?Imagine if Ferrari had dropped Gilles after his first tragic experience with Ferrari in the last few races of 1977?
I HATE FERRARI!!!!!!

You make a good point. Maybe teams could do with being more patient with some of the rookie drivers. Given the right time some of them could blossem better than others. It seems these days right from the off you need to be next to flawless.
One of my favourite moments of him was when he lost the wheel and prceeded to drive round the circuit at pretty high speeds to get back to the pits. Genius!

They got away with a lot of stuff in those days that would be unacceptable these days and would result in penalties. The kid had so much fire in him and that was Enzo's cup of tea, that's what he loved to see. He went from snowmobile racing to Atlantic and straight into a ferrari. Enzo said don't worry, he'll learn to drive.
Look at him go!
