One Hour Qualifying Format Returns In 2006!

Recommended Posts

well with one hour qualifying, depending on the format, drivers will get a numebr of laps to showcase their best time.  under the previous system drivers could go out on ultra low-fuel, light-weight set-ups, and effectively do a couple test laps first to find the lightest and quickest set-up, and then go out on a banzai flying lap towards the end of the session.  it made for exciting qualifying, with lots of track time for each car, with quali times much, much faster than fastest race laps.

i'm not sure how they will make this work with the one tyre rule, and it won't be as exciting as previously (where it was a free for all with often 5 guys on track in the final minute going for a pole lap), but it will be more exciting with more on track laps.

you will be able to see the progress of the various drivers as they improve their set-ups.

agressive drivers like montoya did particularly well, and technically brilliant drivers like m$ and smooth drivers like trulli also did extremely well under this format.

i see no reason why webber can't contine to excel under this format as he is great under quali pressure, aggressive, and has always been fast on low fuel in quali session 1, pre-nurburgring.

*snap! come back to earth:  you guys obviously don't know what you're talking about, and are living in false hope for a failure that is just not going to come.  webber's only faults are his starts and a lack of experience fighting wheel-to-wheel at the front.  all which will be healed as the season progresses.  how this format spells the downfall for webber is beyond comprehension

Michael is not a great qualifier under any system

JPM and DC have really suffered because of the one-lap qualifying system. JPM got no fewer than 7 pole positions in 2002, an incredible achievement if you remember how utterly dominant Ferrari was. Ferrari had the same amount of points as the combined totals of every other constructor! Amazing.

Explain 63 poles.

I suspect that virtually all the learned posters would accept that Michael is not an amazing qualifier and certainly not as good as Senna in this regard.

There you go again quoting absolute statistics but you completely ignore the number of races in which Michael has entered. He has only 63 pole positions in a whopping 220 races meaning he has only been on pole for 28.6% of his races and when we consider the sheer quality of his cars that is clearly not a sensational record at all.

Look at Michael's intuition when he made his moves in his career. He wanted to get out of Jordan because of the engines they were getting for the next year, Yamaha I think they were. He got out of Benetton because he had a cloud over him from 1994 and all and needed to get out. He knew what he was getting into, and made a gamble, and it paid off, freakin big time. He knows how to make decisions.

i'm not saying he needs to be cured  , although i wish there was a magic cure for his ill starts, i'm just saying that these things improve with experience.

do you recall the first time you drove a car? did you rocket off the line on your first couple tries and duck and weave through traffic? no. you get better and better as you gain experience.

That has nothing to do with his qualifying ability but I will respond regardless. Michael has the best manager in F1 in Willi Weber and it was he, not Michael, that suggested and sold a move to Ferrari. Michael was hesitant, quite rightly, as the Benetton was the class of the field.

how can you say that? m$ has countless pole positions, and autoracer has listed just how many. i don't like m$ either, but there's no need to deny the reality, m$ was a good qualifier under both systems and it's obvious that he has been good at qualifying. it's absurd to suggest that he hasn't. his stats can be misleading yes, but even if you only count half his career pole positions then you're looking at a more than competent qualifier.

but i agree jpm has definitely suffered under the new systems, he was mindblowing in 2002. didn't he get 7 straight poles? or was it 7 poles for the year?

Because both he and his team were a bunch of cheats!

no one mentioned senna, the driver. m$ is good at quali. to deny this is to deny the obvious.

Obviously Michael is a good qualifier but not a great qualifier for the aforementioned reasons. I

Oh if Steve Matchett were behind me he'd tell you differently. And MS's career moves did influence is qualifying, because he was moving up to better machinery.

I'm a fan of the '03 format although I don't mind the 1 hour session. I'm just glad quali is on low fuel now.
