JENSON WRITES OFF VICTORY CHANCES

Last Updated: Thursday, 21, July, 2005, 19:57

Jenson Button has written off his chances of a race victory in 2005.

The BAR-Honda star says his car is simply not fast enough to compete with the current pace-setters McLaren and Renault.

"I don't think it will happen this year. We are so far behind. Eight tenths of a second per lap is a lot," he said

"There will be circuits where we will be closer, and where the aerodynamics are not so important like at Monza, where we will have more of a chance, but we just don't have a good enough car this year."

BAR-Honda targeted a race victory as its principal goal for 2005 when it launched its 007 chassis, but has simply not been able to live up to the standards it set last year.

On top of that, a two-race exclusion for illegally using fuel as ballast at Imola, hit the team hard during a key development window at the start of the summer.

"BAR and Honda, as we have seen in the past, have always improved the car throughout the year," explained Button.

"But you do need to have a good base at the beginning.

"I think some of it is down to the new regulations and the changes, that maybe we got a little lost. Look at Ferrari and how much they have lost. They've gone backwards more than we have.

"We are not where I want us to be.

"For most of the season we have not known where we stood because of the reliability problems at the start, and then the disqualification."

Button qualified on the front row of the grid for his home grand prix at Silverstone two weeks ago.

But the British ace admitted to being demoralised when he was unable to do anything about slipping back to fifth at the finish.

"Now that we know where we are we realise we've a long way to go in terms of being closer to the McLarens and Renaults," he said.

"My goal is to keep improving throughout the year and to get closer to the Renaults and the McLarens, and if they slip then maybe we can grab a podium."

Not really, we all pretty much knew that anyway, atleast he's being gracious in defeat, let's just hope that the team can get they're act together for the 2006 season next year.

He's just being realistic. The BAR is not good enough; it can't compete with the Renault or McLaren. It would take a huge slice of luck if he is to win this season.

Oh Come on JS. You haven't been reading what he has been saying recently or what. I'll be more than happy to bring you up to speed on that subject if you want.

They did that in 2004, but the best driver was not up to the task unfortunately. :D

**** off d#cktwat!

I know he hasnt and wont get a real chance to win a race this year, and its annoying the BAR are continuing to develop the car, why dont they just slow down, give up practically on this year, and start going all out for next year!

Peice of advice for you JR. Move to Portugal, and start supporting Monteiro, surely he has got himself a podium this year.

Lol, great stuff.

I was just saying that it probably took a lot of effort for Jenson to admit defeat as he is always talking very optimistically.
