Massa's not afraid to challenge Schumi

planetf1

Felipe Massa is adamant that he'll have the same status as Michael Schumacher at Ferrari next season, and is in fact looking forward to challenging the seven-time World Champion.

Massa, who will replace Rubens Barrichello at the Italian outfit in 2006, is eager for the new season to begin, as he believes going head-to-head with Schumacher in the same machinery is the greatest test any driver can face in Formula One.

"I think it's the greatest comparison a driver can have," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

"It means that you are able to know exactly how you do compared to everyone else."

Massa also refuted claims that he would have to play second fiddle to Schumacher, Ferrari's number one driver.

"I don't think that will happen anymore, as a few things have changed - not much at Ferrari, but in this sport itself.'

"So I'm not worried."

If I remember correctly, Rubens said something analogous to what Massa is reported to have said just before he joined Ferrari. He quickly came to his senses!

agree...........and while not spectacular his giving MS a good fight over the years for pole can't be overlooked.

Indeed. Under the old qualifying format, generally, Rubens was much closer to Michael than he is under single lap qualifying and, as we have seen, he

Indeed.

I think I have been over this before about 5 times; before 2003 there was a clear no.1 and no.2 status in every team but Ferrari were more revealing than others. Barrichello was ofcourse hired as a no.2 Ferrari driver to Michael Schumacher and now when everyone talks about 'team players' they actually mean 'you know what you're the no.2 driver of our team and you don't need us to say what you have to do' (help the no.1 in every way possibly) Simple. When two drivers at the same abilities who are good drivers for example Senna and Prost, McLaren only had the joint status for the blatant reason of if one of them wasn't no.1 the other one would leave the team. So it was joint no.1. (I don't know why they still both stayed but they were both excellent team players) - Well most of the time that is.

Joint no. 1 entails no no.1. It is logically absurd to talk of 'joint no. 1 drivers'.

Sir Frank Williams has always let his drivers race whether it

Well the question is has it always been like that? Next year will be a decade for Michael Schumacher being at Ferrari. Maybe they have more faith in him as a team leader.

Michael has always been the contractual No. 1 at Ferrari. Eddie Irvine was similarly required to help the German to the obvious detriment of his own success. In the end, he couldn

With a due respect Senna, Michael Schumacher the greatest Formula one racing driver ever statistically and ironically only deserves a clear no.1 status. You don't know now how Ferrari will operate with Massa onboard so why don't we just wait until next season until assumptions are made.

A common misconception. In absolute statistical terms yes, Michael Schumacher is the most successful F1 driver ever, but not in relative terms. On that score, the more important measure, he
