MIDLAND TARGETS WORKS TEAMS

Midland F1 Racing has set its targets on beating BMW in 2006, after launching its new M16 challenger at Silverstone on Friday.

The team believes that its all-new Toyota-powered car can make giant steps forward in competitiveness after a season spent learning the ropes following its buy-out of Jordan 12 months ago

"We are ambitious and optimistic, but also realistic," said the team's technical director James Key.

"We are looking at the teams who were ahead of us last year, so that means Red Bull Racing and [bMW] Sauber.

"Realistically I think we can do it, but whether that is at the beginning of the season or the end I don't know."

Key's optimism was echoed by the team's MD Colin Kolles who added that having an all new design should give the team a chance to build on its first season in F1.

In 2005 Jordan-Midland fought mostly with Minardi at the back of the grid, but did score a fortuitous podium at Indianapolis and points at Spa.

"We are very excited," he said.

"We will see how it performs on track but I think the car looks quite nice. We definitely made a big step from the previous car but we will see how the others are doing.

"Last year Tiago [Monteiro] did a brilliant job, finishing on the podium at Indy and in the points at Spa, but we needed luck to finish in the points.

"This year we hope to finish in the points without relying on luck."

It was an honest statement of intent.

He didnt say they were GOING to beat Sauber - just that they were one of the targets.

Why does everyone knock the Midland team before they've even raced?

Because they auction their race seats and test seats and then claim to be serious about racing Whereas Red Bull have a program of helping young drivers come up, Midland have a plan of making a profit from their racing.
