I need to buy myself a car eventually (going to fly back to the UK in a couple of months for two weeks to do an intensive driving course to get a UK licence, as better than UAE one) and anyway I want a convertible since its sunny and warm here always and would be nice, and I'm thinking of an SLK (2006 or 2007 model) as I do really like them, but I kinda want other ideas too (around 20-30,000 pounds) any suggestions??? One of my tutor was saying that most of the car manufacturers are actually waiting for someone else to start so that they could learn from their mistakes, infact its the small and emerging ones who seem to be willing to take the risks. I think every country who talks a lot about global warming and holds countless meetings on its issues should put more money into research industry. Britan seems to be encouraging drivers switch to electric when none (literally) are available. This division of the McLaren Group has been working on the upcoming P11 super car for the past two years. The P11 aims to follow on the past successes of the original McLaren F1 and the McLaren SLR produced for Daimler. A thousand cars will be made in 2011. By the year 2015 McLaren Automotive will produce 4,000 low-volume sports cars of varying performance, character and price. They will be pitched higher than Italian rivals Ferrari F430/450 and the Lamborghini Gallardo. At the top of the range will be the P11. The mid-engined two-seater car will have high-mounted exhausts, a flat underpan and louvred grille among other details. It is said to be environmentally-conscious and could feature such technologies as a road car version of Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS). "The reorganisation of the McLaren Group is an extraordinarily ambitious plan," Dennis said to UK CAR magazine. "We plan to double the value of McLaren within the next three to five years. We have to grow beyond F1 and I truly believe our timing is right." I can get a 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage for 229,000 dirhams for gods sake if I wanted and buy it outright, so a Mito and Mini cooper S are kind of below what I'm looking for. I want a decent car and dont mind if its a few years old if its worth it. I could stretch to 50,000 pounds but I dont want to spend that much on a car when I plan to go on a few holidays and save the rest of my inheritence (therefore I am willing to spend about 25000 pounds!) Oh Ben, you are a lucky boy aren't you? The world is your oyster with that sort of budget. The SLK is okay for pose value but it's no driver's car. My shortlist would incude a Ford Focus RS, A Nissan 370Z, a Porsche Cayman or an Elise/Exige. You could do your shopping, track day or go gay clubbing in any of those. I only have this budget because my nan died! But I'm actually considering buying an apartment instead but to be honest I really don't know what to do! I hate Porsche but I indeed was thinking of the Cayman as it's a nice enough car! I just really really like the SLK though, it's a nice little car and is fast enough for me! I might see if I can get one 3 years old maybe for about 120,000 dirhams and then put the rest in a high interest savings account or something maybe. Or I could just go stupid and get a V8 Vantage but that would be silly as if I ever got a car like that I think I would appreciate it more if I had worked hard and reached the point where I could afford one without needing money from somewhere else if you know what I mean. Otherwise I would never fully appreciate it! To be serious for a moment, don't buy a Vantage. There's a reason why they depreciate so fast. A friend of mine bought one and it spends all its time getting fixed. And that's in the UK where parts are cheap. Plus the Roadster version is crap and I fully agree with you that you need a convertible in a nice climate like the UAE. My attitude with cars is to buy the cheapest car that you can love. I flirted for a while with buying a 911, but in the end went for a relatively cheap (ish) Mustang and now I can spend all the rest of my money on hookers and cocaine . One of my colleagues has an SLK. With no parts needing to be replaced- just oil change and brake check etc etc- my last service was $90. His was $1200. Mind you he insists (stupidly) on taking it into a Mercedes service center where they plug a laptop into it and it apparently generates a random string of numbers and puts a dollar sign at the front which he unhappily pays.
