In words of Button, Vandoorne has done better than me. (I think it was his third outing with that car).

Hold on, Alonso's had quite a few knarly accidents in his career WebRic. Not just the one from the last race or his "incident" during testing.

I agree for once Alonso wasn't a pussy and faught back against Herbert, but if this was say Kimi, people would be screaming at the top of their lungs that he quit the sport.

This is supposedly, I state supposed because I for one do not believe it, that he's the greatest car markmans to have lived in our generation. Aus GP was amatuer hour. That's what Herbert mentioning, Alonso just isn't on it anymore and it really might be time for him to retire.

Seriously what's with the retirement talk and all. Herbert is an idiot. FIA safety team din let him race. He wanted to race. If he is not motivated enough he would have not been there in the paddock when he was told to go home and take rest. It's good that alonso gave him back.

It's being brought up because Herbert said it. I'd have to say an ex driver telling another driver it might be time, holds even if you don't believe it, a bit more weight than us armchair experts saying it.

Alonso has already said how unmotivated he was last year, and he gets a free pass. Kimi has NEVER said he's been unmotived, EVER! and yet how many dozens of times has that been dredged up in the press.

I'm concerned the FIA cleared him so quickly after the crash. Having two fractured ribs and a small puncture in ones lungs is no laughing matter. And regardless of how he feels, he should not be racing this weekend after what he went through.

He'll do what he does and scuttle his career at somepoint, but Herbert was simply voicing his opinion something he's entitled to do.

I find amusing that Dennis wants to play a doctor who decides if and when his driver can race. Funny individual that guy is, really.

I see your point but how many times has kimi been given a "get out of jail free" card? More than I can remember and as soon as alonso makes an honest mistake that he has already admitted to, it's time for him to retire? Give me a break. Yet he is straight in there helping vandoorne with setups and such, to maximise his potential, really sounds likes someone who has been accused in the past of just thinking about himself? He could've stayed home or in the hotel.

Kool monkey , since it's happened to kimi doesn't mean it should happen to alonso. More over I Don think alonso has had a free pass last year. Don't forget the car was completely unreliable and pathetic to drive. It's a test for any driver. He was on points a lot of times last year wen the car failed him. Singapore , Monaco , Austin etc.

People don't notice stuff like that mate, I've tried pointing it out a number of times.

As a side matter, the exchange between Herbert and Alonso has made no sense to me at all. Herbert expressed an opinion that Alonso is not as sharp anymore as he was in his peak. Alonso, getting his nose out of the joint, because he is used to be only known as Telfonso (or untouchable Mac), instead to refute Herberts point of view, barges uninvited into live take, and talking nonsense that he is WDC and Herbert is not. How is Alonso's point -- I am WDC and you are not -- related to Herbert's comment is beyond me. Alonso really behaved like high school adolescent, and that's my own opinion. I am not particularly a fan of Herbert, but Alonso made an a***s of himself. Mine is bigger than yours is a really convincing argument - not.

Herbert just talked crap, saying he was unmotivated, how the hell would he know? He got what he deserved, can't dish it out and not get it back.

Hmm I see your point Sakae. At first I thought maybe he was just standing up for himself, but he's gone the my daddy is richer than your daddy argument. Instead, why didn't he rock up, pull up his shirt to show his lack of bruising and say he's fit, he hopes to get into the car and race, but will abibe by the FIA's medical decisions....

I honestly and this is a first, do not want to be bagging Alonso at this point of the day. I'm horrendously sick myself and I do feel somewhat sorry for him. But I did say right after Melbourne that I didn't think he'd race this race, and what do you know, it's not happening.

Herbert may have been out of line, but he's a commentator, he's paid to commentate, and all the commentators use their own thoughts and oppinions in their time on camera.

Alonso could have handled things differently. I'm not so sure it made him look like a total a##hole, but he sure as heck didn't across as Kimi cool to me either. He was so wound up, laugh it off seriously. It's race #2 and he's already cracking, and that I'm starting to maybe believe for real.

Bah, your reading into it to much, he just so happened to see Johnny as he was entering the Mclaren garage from behind, it's not like he went looking for him or something like that. To me I don't think Johnny Herbert shouldve said things like "he should retire" or "he is lacking enthusiasm" if he worded what he wanted to say in a better way, it wouldn't have happened. Maybe fernando's shouldn't have said what he did but he had a right to say something. I just think it's rich coming from a driver who stayed around well beyond his "used by" date and then basically says alonso is doing the same thing.

I never heard he was totally fit, where and who said that? And besides if he did say that, with so many drivers waiting in the wings, any driver would've said the same thing. What's this vendetta everyone has with alonso ? There favourite driver acts and does a similar thing but there is every excuse as to why, with alonso its different. There's been plenty of drivers who have driven while managing pain, what's the issue here?

There were medical reasons why he was excluded from the Bahrain race. Several days he was in the news that he is totally healthy, and wants to drive in this third race. Now we are reading that he will have to manage pain in this race. I am not sure that content of "news" adds up to make any sense.

How was he supposed to know how he would feel unless he drove the car? He was excluded from Bahrain yes but if he can do a fp then he can race so I can't even see the issues with these stories.

Vandoorne is on standby. If Alonso is in pain, there is another driver who can take his place. Speaking of pain implies that the body is not ready for punishment race will induce, and under normal conditions, it can harm him in the long run.

Maybe in ten years ago when they had to actually drive the cars flat out out, yeah but he said it's manageable so I can't see the issue, it's not like it's a foot injury like kubicas and the foot is used a lot more than just stomach muscles. Anyway, Ian sure he has trained anyway so I really think it's just over hype.

Alonso hasn't been honest about his ailments and health in recent years. Testing accident last year is the big elephant in the room. He's got broken ribs and yet was bummed he couldn't race 2 weeks ago. Now he's still sore and will need to manage the pain. It wouldn't hurt him to just be honest about it. Give Vandoorne another go. Not like he's going to do badly.

Medical people I know were predicting it will take a few months before he will be fit. That's an idle talk without actually seeing a patient. Now, when he is back in the car, then the original diagnosis as reported simply makes no sense to a couple of very smart guys.

Course he would be sore, the belt tightening under braking, the g forges on the ribs in the high speed corners. Heck I even had to wear a kidney belt in karting so I can only imagine how it would be in a f1 car. But if he can do it, let him, if he is worse after the race, then he can't race next time can he?

Is he having a low esteem of himself to have the need to make such declarations, or is he suffering from the mid-life crisis? Could be he has collected too many blows into his helmet.

Yeah well that's what I used to say to myself all the time when karting, that I was the fastest out there, bit of positive thinking to try help you mentally. But with alonso, I guess maybe next year we will find out.

Someone should remind him, as one of a few examples, that 2014 Ferrari was built -- by the admission of his former management -- thoroughly for him, despite that his style was not exactly convergent with Räikkönen. He has nothing to brag about, shameless ....
