One Hour Qualifying Format Returns In 2006!

Recommended Posts

From: GP2005.com

After several attempts to alter the qualifying format in such a way that it would produce more excitement, the FIA has finally realized that the one lap format is just not working.

Already changed once this year due to constant complaining form the British media that it was a drama covering the second and final qualifying session on the Sunday morning, GP2005.com can now reveal that the format that was put in place at the Nurburgring, one flying lap per driver in just one session on Saturday afternoon, will only last until the end of the current season when a new, hopefully much improved, formula will be put into action.

The FIA and team bosses have all agreed, oddly enough, to return to a one hour session, and while they are yet to full decide on the format to be used in that hour, they are all in agreement that it can

I suspect that this has been accepted for having been backed by Ferrari..they always said to dislike the single lap qualifying format....Who cares..now we won't have drivers making ultra quick times with low fuel....Guess who won't impress anymore....maybe a certain australian driver?

We won't see anymore someone posting that "at least Webber has a stunning qualifying pace" to justify his poor mistakes during the races...

Fantastic news for every one, perhaps apart from Mark Webber...

Glad that the FIA has finally seen the light and will be returning to the ONLY qualifying format which every one was happy about.

   Where is Monty to chime in with "but Montoya is exciting"?

Does he still predict that JPM will win the 2005 WDC in his signature? I find that highly unlikely, as I did before the start of the season

well with one hour qualifying, depending on the format, drivers will get a numebr of laps to showcase their best time. under the previous system drivers could go out on ultra low-fuel, light-weight set-ups, and effectively do a couple test laps first to find the lightest and quickest set-up, and then go out on a banzai flying lap towards the end of the session. it made for exciting qualifying, with lots of track time for each car, with quali times much, much faster than fastest race laps.

i'm not sure how they will make this work with the one tyre rule, and it won't be as exciting as previously (where it was a free for all with often 5 guys on track in the final minute going for a pole lap), but it will be more exciting with more on track laps.

you will be able to see the progress of the various drivers as they improve their set-ups.

agressive drivers like montoya did particularly well, and technically brilliant drivers like m$ and smooth drivers like trulli also did extremely well under this format.

i see no reason why webber can't contine to excel under this format as he is great under quali pressure, aggressive, and has always been fast on low fuel in quali session 1, pre-nurburgring.

*snap! come back to earth: you guys obviously don't know what you're talking about, and are living in false hope for a failure that is just not going to come. webber's only faults are his starts and a lack of experience fighting wheel-to-wheel at the front. all which will be healed as the season progresses. how this format spells the downfall for webber is beyond comprehension
