EJ BAFFLED BY WILLIAMS ENGINE DEAL

ITV

Former team boss Eddie Jordan believes Frank Williams has made a major mistake by opting for a Cosworth customer engine deal for 2006 after parting ways with BMW.

Jordan says manufacturer backing is a prerequisite of success in contemporary Formula 1 and Cosworth will simply lack the financial wherewithal to challenge the might of the big car makers

Exactly people get all hyped up about cosworth releasing sound bites of their engine online. I asked this question earlier and did not get an answer. I guess you would know - do cosworth have any previous experience of V8s running at 21000rpm?

on the other hand williams probably wanted a 1 year deal, as they are moving to toyota after that or so it is reported. maybe they are stowing away cash for 2007, with the button deal and what they get from HP. next season could be a transition season for them.

We can only go by recent reports, and by all accounts the engine has long been running on the dyno and producing solid numbers. However we will only really know how good it is once the season starts next year. I agree with cav, I see '06 being a transition year for Williams.

Solid numbers compared to what? All I can see is that cosworth are desperate for some positive publicity for their engine next year, and have carried out a big campaign for that. The other teams dont really care, we'll know how well they have done next year.

btw williams are the only team using the cosworth V8 next year. did they not begin development before Williams signed up? who were they making an engine for ?

What would EJ know? He obviously didn't make the right calls for his team, considering where he is now. I think I'd trust FW's call over EJ's.

"Solid numbers compared to what?"

Nothing was stated. Obviously it seems to meet their targets, hence the numbers are solid. Cosworth maintained development of their V8 in the off chance that they would be given a reprieve by an F1 team, then Williams came along!

What about next year Red Bull USA, they will be using Cosworth and it may be the V8 if Red Bull want to. THis would be very good for Red Bull because they will get to use 2 different engine manufactures so they can easily decide in 2007 which is the better engine and change one of the engines so they are both the same. If Red Bull USA will use the Cosworth V8 then that will help Williams too.

last I read Red Bull USA or whatever they'll be called will use the PS05 with the rev restricted Cosworth V10, in sum, this year's car.

Which is a bummer

that would be illegal as they're not allowed to simply buy chassis off another team. I think the PS05 with the rev limited V10 would be a good option. Out of the box the car has proved to be a nice little machine, all it needs is alot more testing and development. Red Bull will want this junior team to succeed, hence I believe they will throw money in that direction.

I think that Reb Bull USA will build another F1 car from scratch because it is hard to modify a F1 car once it is built. What i would do is build a new F1 car that runs with a V8 engine and use the new cosworth engine. Then in 2007 Red Bull can decide which engine is the better one Ferrari or Cosworth and switch accordingly. Its a win win situation.

they're going to use rev limited V10s I think.

Well now that "Red Bull" own Minardi, it seems to me that they will run the same engine as the major team run , or at least they SHOULD

I don't think that's entirely legal, besides, Cosworth have signed a contract with Williams for exclusive use of their V8's. I think sticking with the current PS05 would be a good option, as I said, all it needs is alot of testing and development, something Red Bull's money will come in handy for. I think it's way too late to start designing a new car for next year.

From my understanding Formula 1 teams arnt afraid of doing something illegal if they think they wont get caught, i dont see Red Bull being any different.

No question that there's no time to begin designing a new car. The other teams are currently finalizing their designs for next year, which, in the case of evolutionary designs, began at the beginning of the season, and for revolutionary designs, generally began a further six months to a year before that.

But that raises an interesting point. To what degree must the chassis of the RedBull - or for that matter, McLaren's future - 'A' Teams and 'B' Teams be distinct from one another? As nojvnof1 says, the FIA rules currently state that each team must construct their own 'unique' chassis. In the case of McLaren, both chassis will be designed and built within their new Paragon facility, in an attempt to more fully realize its potential and optimize its effectiveness (in RD McLaren speak).

With both operations being carried out in the same facility, how could there not be a technology transfer between the two teams, and for that matter, isn't that the entire point of running a 'B' Team - to support the 'A' Team. To the extent that the relevance of data generated by the junior team is a function of the similarity in technology being utilized, if the teams operate on entirely unique technology, there will be little or no value in the information and data generated by the 'B' Team, thus defeating the purpose (and competitive technical advantage) in running a second team in the first place.

The key, as I see it, is determining what level of differentiation renders a particular chassis 'unique' from another. If this issue hasn't been addressed (and I can't imagine that McLaren and RedBull would embark upon this without having done so) I would be greatly surprised.

Can anyone offer any insight?
