Wurz and Williams

When McLaren revealed that they had no intention of retaining Alex Wurz’s services for the 2006 Formula One season, the Woking based squad opting to sign DTM Champion Gary Paffett to the role of third driver instead, it was thought that the Austrian may swap places with Paffett and join the DTM series to race for Mercedes instead.

However, according to our very reliable sources, it appears as if this is not going to be the case after all and Alex will not be driving one of the four official Class C

Mercedes. There are several other options available to him, such as signing with a smaller team in the German series, or, with Audi, but these options don’t seem to be very viable.

In fact, Wurz could still remain in Formula One as third driver for another season, even with an option to race in 2007 if things go according to plan, but he would need to convince the Cosworth powered Williams team that he is the man for the job. While his talent is widely known, the biggest stumbling block could be money, something that is not too uncommon in this series of late.

While Alex would be trying to convince Sir Frank that he should have the job on his merits, former Jordan driver Narain Karthikeyan is waiting in the wings with a six figure budget to offer the Grove based squad. But, Austrian television seems to think he has managed to do just this, with ORF announcing that the deal to be the third man for Williams next year has already been finalized.

pitpass reports the story as well

so it is more and more likely that wurz will be williams 3rd driver for 06 with an option for the race

seat in 07

a good decision IMO, by sfw, if the reports are accurate, as 06 will be the first time in ages that williams have a 3rd car on fridays and they would want to use it for their benefit by having an experienced test driver like wurz

and it would also be good for wurz's fading f1 career ,and would be a master stroke from him and his management ,as he would have got lesser time at the wheel in a mclaren c#ckpit as they wouyld not have a friday car and they have 2 testers and many young guns waiting in the wings.. and the possibility of a future at mclaren was bleak

BTW,MODS can this topic be moved to f1 discussions,as i had posted it in "cafe"only coz the report was

initially in a german site "orf" and i was not able to comprehend fully ,and was not sure of the authenticity

and credibility of the report

This would be a surprise if true, but seemingly a good move by Wurz and Williams. Williams would benefit from having a man of Alex's experience as Friday driver, which would help young Nico as well. This spells bad news for Narain as it now looks as though he it out of F1 altogether and for Webber, as if he has a dud season, Wurz would most probably take his seat and partner Rosberg at Williams in '07.

Wurz and Williams

Some people believe in Santa Claus and others think that there is a Tooth Fairy and over in Austria there are some who think that Alexander Wurz is going to move to Williams to become the team's test driver. No-one has bothered to ask Williams what the team thinks of this idea. The response is that the team is not expecting to see the lank Austrian in Grove in the months ahead and that it is much more likely that Narain Karthikeyan will be seen pedalling the team's third car, thanks to financial backing from Tata Motors. The team has yet to make an announcement to this effect but it is anticipated that one will eventually come. There is the potential for the team to have a second driver but he is unlikely to get much time in the car as Mark Webber is keen to do as much running as possible and Nico Rosberg needs to do as many miles as he can to get himself ready for the season ahead.

Wurz is more likely to show up in DTM.

Williams can have more than one tester, remember they once had Gene and Pizzonia in 04? Ferrari have Luca, Gene, and that other new guy.

PS, those translations are so funny!

It's basically saying (in decent english!) that at the end of the 05 season, there was something about Wurz being at least a test driver for Williams after switching from Mclaren to williams. Nico and Mark both have contracts, however, with good performance, it may be possible for him to grab a regular seat

I hope Wurz gets the seat - he has more experience in testing than NK anyway.

Sometime back,SFW was telling he will have third driver but expects money from him. Thats where NK came into the pic.

I think priorities have changed for SFW or the balace sheet made the change of mind.

We have to wait and see.

Wurz was given deadline by Mclaren but simply ignored it. And Mclaren went for Gary Paffett. So Wurz had/has something up his sleeve!

Karthikeyan and Williams

Karthikeyan has tested twice for Williams

With unconfirmed reports from Austria suggesting that Alex Wurz may have signed for the WilliamsF1 team as test driver, attention has shifted to Narain Karthikeyan who was widely expected to join Williams as test driver.

Reports from India are now saying that Karthikeyan could still join Williams as a second test driver, and are even suggesting that Karthikeyan has another option that 'could be better than Williams'.

India's PTI news agency quotes a source close to Karthikeyan saying: "In terms of career move, it would be a better option for Narain. If it works out, Narain, even if Williams offers him the test driver's spot and pays him, will not take it. It is that good an option."

What this alternative option could be remains to be seen, however the source said a deal should be done by 15 January.

f1racing.net

the option takked about in this article is "toyota" test driver seat

zonta was recently confirmed by the team,PANIS WASNOT...

I recall reading an article that suggested the most likely path into a race seat for Wurz would be if Nico doesn't deliver by mid-season. At the risk of offending Kaiser, that to me seems quite plausible, as I'm not sure the younger Rosberg is entirely ready for F1. Having said that, if Webbo is off to greener pastures in '07 (i.e. to possibly replace FA at Renault) then a full-time race seat for Wurz seems possible - and long overdue if you ask me.

Williams and Wurz

Williams F1 HAS signed a contract with Austrian Alexander Wurz for him to become the team's test and reserve driver in 2006. Although there was speculation yesterday, the deal was not completed until this afternoon and one can only guess that Williams has either decided that it no longer wants money for the third driver or that Wurz has some backing to get him the job at Williams. The news means that Narain Karthikeyan may find himself out of work although it is still possible that the Indian driver could become the team's fourth driver.

An announcement is expected shortly.

grandprix.com

now it makes sense ,why Wurs defied "ron's""1 week " pressure, surely without something concrete

at williams(like an option to race in 07) he would not have refused to sign a mclaren contract

I think Nico may be better next year than many people may expect. Only time will tell. Still don't think Wurz should have another crack at F1 in 2007, firstly, he'd be 32 and secondly, he's not put MANY impressive RACE performances in. He does, however, seem a very solid tester (despite him being in the quickest car in the field last year...). I was right about not being able to see Wurz in DTM after all ;)
