Button faces make or break season - Irvine

Jenson Button faces a make or break season and must convincingly beat new team mate Rubens Barrichello this season if he is not to be always thought of as a second-rate driver, Eddie Irvine says.

Irvine says Button has been beaten by his team mates too many times in the past. "Jenson will either confirm his talent or confirm his lack of pace this year," Irvine told Motorsport News. "Rubens is the perfect measure for him. Can Jenson beat him or be relegated to being a number two for the rest of his career?"

"Jenson has been beaten by all his team mates apart from Takuma Sato and Jacques Villeneuve," Irvine added. I have to keep looking at that - it's evidence you can't ignore. A world champion has never been blown off by all his team mates."

"I'd employ Jenson as a number two driver - his strengths are he doesn't make mistakes and brings it home all the time," Irvine went on. "I worry about his pace because Trulli and Fisichella both killed him and there was nothing between him and Jacques really."and Jacques was totally unfavoured in that team (BAR)."

Irvine also said in the interview that he expected the 2006 season to be "the best in a long-time", with a three-way fight for the title between veteran Michael Schumacher of Ferrari, new champion Fernando Alonso at Renault and McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen.

He said Alonso and Raikkonen were "right there in the (Ayrton) Senna league".

He added: "The three best guys are going to be in the three best cars. Michael is up against guys who are half his age and have twice the balls."

But Irvine said Schumacher, a seven-time champion, still had the edge on his younger rivals.

"Michael is still a 9.1 out of 10 and the other guys are a nine. But age doesn't matter. You don't lose it. I was better in my last year than I was at any stage.

"Michael isn't getting any slower. If he'd had a better car, he would have won 11 titles by now."

I'm not going to get on my high horse. Irv has a history of talking bollocks about other drivers. We must remember that he used to refer to himself as "the second best driver in the world" when he was at ferrari

true! as it was very close between him an trulli, and towards the end of 2000 he was more competative against ralph. One must not forget he was only 20 when he came into f1 and has been against (minus TS) far more experienced teamates!

Yes but he still beat Trulli in the WDC which is what counts. Also with all trulli's retirements, its fair to say that, but it would be interesting to know ehether he retired while racing infront of JB or behind!

Button Versus Trulli - 2002, Back by popular demand

Many of you seem to be under the mistaken impression that because Button scored more points in 2002 than Trulli, that he performed better and some of you even think he is better. A detailed analysis of the facts suggests otherwise. All me to explain.

QUALIFYING

Trulli outqualifies Button 12-5, a huge margin, at a time when qualifying was considered by many to be the most accurate measure of driver ability.

RACE PERFORMANCE

Button outscores his teammate 14-9 but as always reliability is massively in his favour, Trulli having mechanical failures nearly twice as often. If we exclude the races where one or the other suffered a mechanical failure and only count the races where they competed against each other, the reuslts are more sobering for the Button fan - Jarno beat Jenson 9-7!

CONCLUSION

But for a gross advantage in mechanical reliability, Jenson Button would not have beaten his more capable teammate. Any suggestion that Jenson demonstrated his dominance over Trulli in 2002 is complete rubbish. Unfortunately it is just the kind of thing that is routinely bandied about the forum by the Briton's followers

Fair enough mate, but no matter how you look at it, neither killed the other!

To put it simply, in absolute terms JB won, in Relative terms Trulli won! It was close anyway really!

I think Trulli and Ralf are equally matched. Trulli did the better job in 05 but Ralf had problems adapting to the car. In the second half of the year toyota sorted it out (a bit) and Ralf started driving like he can do. Remember he was very impressive in belgium, lapping extremely fast until his team called him in and ruined it. In 2006 I expect trulli to have upper hand in quali but there will be occasions when Ralf drives as well as anyone on the grid and gets some big results
