pumpdoc 2 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 This is from my local paper, this guy is a good motorsports writer. You may not agree with his listings but it is interesting. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20...s28fastcom.html
monza gorilla 1 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 A very interesting list, but some of the entries are a bit thin on reasons for their inclusion. I would add Stirling Moss, maybe even Jack Brabham, Hannu Mikkola and Henri Toivenen or Erik "Pa Taket" Carlsson, but then it is a personal list and we can all think of people we'd rather see. Certainly it gets you thinking.

monza gorilla 1 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 Yep. My list would lean towards Europeans, I suppose. Not knocking the guy at all because you can only include what you know. I know very little about Cale Yarborough (even though I know of him) for example, so he wouldn't be on my list. A good article though - you may have started something . Allthough the inclusion of Surtees suprised me in a good way, most people that read my home town paper are proably scratching their heads
monza gorilla 1 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 Yeah, Surtees surprised me too. I was pleased though, as well, because it showed me that the guy who wrote the piece was a fan, and not just a local hack.

Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 Thanks for the article, Bruce. I can quibble about the order a bit, but who couldn't? The writer knows his stuff and has informed opinions about it.

Indeed, Tony Stewart and Nigel Mansell don't belong and to make a general comment, there are too many Americans and too much emphasis on stock car racing which has only recently (in the last ten years) grown to become internationally significant. Jem of the Shire 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 You have to take into account that this is a list from an American writer and thus the slant towards more American style racers. Yeah its clear from the list that its written by an american, and the fact that Mario Andretti is the 2nd best driver of all time might show a tad bit of bias. I doubt the guy has ever heard of great rally drivers such as Vatenen and Auriol

You may not agree with his listings but it is interesting.http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20...s28fastcom.html One correction.... MARIO ANDRETTI The only IndyCar champion to go to Europe and win a Formula One world championship?????? But an Interesting list all the same.
Wez 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 But an Interesting list all the same. Yes, Indeed... I wouldn't Mario in the top 5 though or at least not ahead of Senna. But still an interesting (somewhat American biased) read.

bajo39 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Typical short sighted American writer who interchanges America and world at will. The important thing is that he got the pick for the number one spot correct... Anyway, the caveat for any such list is that it's biased by the author's opinions and limited by his view of the world. A Briton would probably have Jenson Button on there
