The thing is I still have to make a difficult choice and its not clear what I should do - in other words I could reasonably choose not to believe. But its unjust for God to punish me for making a reasonable mistake. You are missing the point that I've been trying to make you understand, you are already out God's side, if you stay like that you won't be punished for making any reasonable mistake, you are being punished for your sins because your sins have not been forgiven, you need to be forgiven to reach God, but the only way that a man can be forgiven is by believing in Jesus's name, Jesus said this John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 10:9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. You already know that you are a sinner and you already know that you need to be forvigen and you already know what you need to do to be forgiven but like you said you don't want to abandon your rational thought even when your rational thought is desiring the existence of God that you are denying. Look at this story in Mark 9 The Healing of a Boy with an Evil Spirit 14When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16"What are you arguing with them about?" he asked. 17A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not." 19"O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me." 20So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?" "From childhood," he answered. 22"It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." 23" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." 24Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" I think you should ask Jesus the same "help me overcome my unbelief!" if you really want to find God and I am sure you do, he will help you to, but you got to asking to do it, he will not force you to do anything because he wants you to choose him, all you have to say is this Jesus help me overcome my unbelief!
