F1 Testing Silverstone

Recommended Posts

Evening folks,

I'll be heading to Silverstone in June for my first experience of F1 cars "in the flesh". Just wondering if anyone else has been before and if so, do they have any tips to share about where best to stand to get photographs etc.

Also - is there any info yet about which teams will be there, or even anyone from this forum also planning on being there?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Dan

I guess the slower corners after Bridge and before Copse will give you some nice 'working of the wheel' shots. But for a breath taking demonstration of direction change, there is no substitute for standing at the end of Maggots just before the start of Hanger straight. Whether you can capture the drama of the energy involved through there on a still camera is something you will know more about than i do.

I won't be there and don't have details of who will be in attendance. At a guess i would say historically Renault, Williams and Spyker should be there at a minimum.

Thanks for that. I'll have a 300mm lens on a EOS 300D, so I'm planning on some slow shutter shots from a side-on position.

Wouldn't you want a faster shutter so as to get the cars clear??? :eusa_think:

Nope - I want blurred backgrounds. I'll try about 250th to start and go from there. I do a lot of slow shutter work at airshows on fast jets and warbirds - a faster shutter gives you no sense of speed.

I've looked at other pics taken from testing and reckon the exit of Bridge is where I'll spend my day - exactly the shots I'm after from there.

Rest assured I'll share any photos I get with you all. :)

How close are you at Bridge? I've only got a 300mm lens and I'm worried it won't be enough?

There's a high grass slope that spectators all sit/stand on at the exit of bridge so you're kind of looking down on the cars.

At a test session i have no idea how close they let you stand, but on race day even if you have the cheapest ticket (which I had) you're still certainly well within 300m of the track! In fact more like 20-30 metres at a guess

Oh good - that sounds perfect!

I really can't wait - I've followed F1 since '98 and have only ever seen 4 static F1 cars in that time. Just hoping there's a good turn out of teams - want to see Jenson and the McLarens most of all.
