Well I just watched the GP Masters race on BBC2.

I thought it was a good race, even if it was in the end between just 2 drivers, but then, that's Patrese as I remember him, being a holder-upper.

I hope this does get more races.

Anyone see the way those cars slid and seemed to have a moment nearly every corner, but that's how it should be. Formula 1 could do with cars that do the same now, to add in more drama to races.

A great battle at the very front, though in a way I was expecting Fittipaldi to make it past Mansell at some moments. Also some good battles back down the field. From what I have heard of A1, I expect this to quickly overtake it in popularity, assuming it gets a series of races next year.

It was good - and having only been watching F1 since 1991 and have seen a fair bit of early 90's Indy, at least it was drivers I am aware of who were featuring at the front!
My only worry is that as an avid F1 fan I don't recall ever seeing half those drivers race, and I worry this series may just be enjoyed by people 30+. Which it shouldn't be.
So roll up, roll up those 90's F1 greats aged above the required age of 45. So thats anyone born before 1961 - So thats Damon Hill[45] (and Prost obviously) of the 1990's world champions, Brundle[46], Berger [46], Boutsen[48], Alboreto[49], Alliot[51], Martini [44 - but will be old enough next year] and thats just a few.
Infact, maybe they should lower the age limit. 45 is quite old when you consider someone like Mark Blundell or Erik Comas is too young! Perhaps it should be reduced to 40 or let Race Winners to be fast tracked once they have been retired from F1 for 2 full seasons (Hakkonen, Irvine, Herbert, Alesi etc) A full field with 26 drivers.

Come on any F1 old timer who lurks online here but hasn't let their alias slip ... sign-up - it'll be fun.

P.S - having just watched it on BBC (admitantly for Murry Walker) - Did anyone know it was live on Motors TV a free Sky sports channel!

No, I watched it on the good old BBC.  Motors TV is a great channel though…

You make some good points.  Mansell and Fittipaldi are household names and the series needs more of these to attract the younger viewer.  Prost would be ideal.  So would Damon Hil.

This is a far better series that A1.

Yeah I knew it was on Motors TV Live, and that BBC had a delay, but I only found out about Motors TV this morning, irrelevant for me however as I don't have Sky.

I think if he's seen this (the race, not my ramblings), it should persuade Prost to take part if the series goes ahead. He could easily be up there with Mansell and Fittipaldi.

and Manntec, to refer to your point about 30+ people only watching, I fall some 7 years under that and I watched and enjoyed, and know quite a few of similar age who also did (all supporting Il Leone and enjoying hearing Murray again). An encouraging thought if there are more younger fans watching and recognising the names involved (or most of them).

Driver Eligibility for GPM.

Drivers must:

1)  Have retired from all forms of open wheel racing

2)  Have competed in F1 for two complete seasons

3)  Have passed a medical examination

4)  Be more than 45 years on the 1st Jan for the season to follow, and have retired from F1 for two complete seasons.

Interesting stuff…

Didn't Murray mention in his commentary that one of the drivers (completely escapes me which 1) had been driving in A1? maybe that doesn't qualify as a form of open-wheel racing? :P
*either that or i misheard and the driver was involved with A1 but not as a driver.

well Jones and Fittipaldi run their respective national teams in the A1GP series, maybe that's what he was referring to.

"You just don't mess with Jacques Villeneuve" - Murray Walker, 1997 Hungarian GP.
"When Jacques was with us, he was a very aggressive driver, fiercely competitive, mentally hard as nails. Very quick with it, very gifted. A bright fellow, undoubtedly, very intelligent. He was an absolutely born racing driver - look at the way he'd bang wheels with Michael, pass people on the outside, that kind of thing" -Sir Frank Williams on Jacques Villeneuve
"This year, with BMW, JV's going very well, and I'm pleased for him. Whether or not he'll get a drive next year I don't know, but I hope he does, he's an unusual, and very strong addition to the F1 community. A character." - Sir Frank Williams again on Jacques Villeneuve
The Nojvnof1 2006 driver lineup - Jacques Villeneuve, Nico Rosberg, Christian Klein, Scott Speed.

5) Not be named Phillipe Alliot.

I watched the race on the BBC, and enjoyed it immensely. Super entertainment. It does need more drivers, though. Also nice to see that Nige is still capable of a good whinge!

Yeah, it was Jan Lammers (Holland) - He is Holland's alternative driver to Jos the Boss!

Incidentally. I'm only a year younger than you DemonHorse, and I have not seen people many of them race F1. Although a few of them (Like Cheever and Johansson) have been involved in other race series I have followed, and I have read the F1 history books and seen videos and clip programmes. Their F1 days were before my time. If it was not for Mansell, Warwick and Patraese (a driver I had a soft spot for back in his Williams and Benatton days) I may not have had the enjoyment I did have watching Sundays race. Racing is most fun when you have personal hero's and villan's who you will on or try to hex respectively. So all I was saying that many younger racing fans won't know most of the drivers involved.

I thought the first GP masters race was a massive success. Apparently next year there will be an entire season consisting of 6 races including venues such as Silverstone, Monza, & Kyalami.

Incidentally, I saw somewhere someone saying there weren’t enough known drivers in the series. They are obviously far too young (probably 15)???

I thought the line up was rather impressive, and I’ve seen nearly all of them race in there F1 days apart from only really Jones & Fittipoldi (whom I saw quite a bit of while he was racing in America).

Damon Hill and Alain Prost would be welcome additions to the line-up.  It is important to get more famous drivers as the youngsters wouldn’t have heard of the majority of these drivers and we must remember that they comprise a healthy part of the viewing audience…

I would give my left hand to see Mario Andretti race these cars. Its a distant dream but not that distant if you consider his attitude against racing. I`m sure he has at least thought about it....  :)

Thanks Monza Gorilla! :) Sure he is old (65 yrs) and I`m not sure how competetive he would be but its not that long ago that he drove single seater (practice sessions for Indy 500 in 2003). And, I guess Paul Newmann was over 70 when he drove sports cars in US and even succeed...

Thanks again guys. You make me feel like home here :) . Senna, from the finnish drivers JJ has always been my favorite for some reason. I know that he is not the best driver but I like the character and besides I always give credit to the drivers that drive different categories. JJ has driven (well) in F1, champ cars, prototypes, GT`s, rally cars, etc....
