cavallino 2 Report post Posted June 3, 2007 ABBA? There's something wrong with me isn't there? I should probably avoid ever hearing a song by Girls Aloud or I might catch whatever Ben has Try "Amused to Death" by Roger Waters. I think it's your cup of tea. Will do Run Devil Run - Paul McCartney and Dave Gilmour together, with a bit of Mick Green thrown in. Just a thought. Will look for that too, sounds very interesting. On a side note I really must listen to some more Pink Floyd - I got put off them by having to watch The Wall in school in General Studies when I was very early into my Blues phase and so it didn't really appeal at the time. You should

Max Mosley 2 Report post Posted June 3, 2007 Is it wrong of me to think ABBA were moderately talented? Not great I'm sure, not like Bob Dylan say, but compared to most bands today they were quite good surely? I mean making happy, cheesy music can't automatically make you crap, otherwise a lot of Paul McCartney's stuff would suck too surely? Maybe it does? I definitely prefer John Lennon or Bob Dylan but stil...

Obviously, not in the league of Dylan, etc. At the time, Abba said they were successful because they used simple melodies, but when other people have come to do, say the Abba musical, for example, they have realised they are actually quite complex songs. I always get the impression they were perfectionists with regards to their music, in that I can imagine even the tiniest detail was never missed regarding harmonies, etc, etc.

cavallino 2 Report post Posted June 4, 2007 If you start liking Brotherhood of Man, that's when you start worrying! to be honest i have no idea who/what are the ABBA... i listen to very limited english music so... You've probably heard their music, which has been endlessly plagiarised and imitated, used in advertisements etc. Is it wrong of me to think ABBA were moderately talented? Not great I'm sure, not like Bob Dylan say, but compared to most bands today they were quite good surely? You'd be surprised, I had heard most of ABBA's famous stuff as imitations, which makes it sound really corny. Sitting with a good sound setup and listening to their best songs (there are some really awful ones too) is quite an experience. Everything is just so right. I mean making happy, cheesy music can't automatically make you crap, otherwise a lot of Paul McCartney's stuff would suck too surely? Maybe it does? I definitely prefer John Lennon or Bob Dylan but stil... It doesn't, though most of The Beatles' earlier stuff is interesting because of waht followed it. ABBA are different, they are so melodiously perfect that you suddenly realise how far behind most of today's pop music is. And the vocals are simply incredible - those girls sure were talented. Also I've read that they had a great bunch of musicians backing them. S.O.S. and Waterlo are my favourites, and somehow you don't want them to be any different, even the corny lyrics, I can't imagine them being any different. You almost got away with that, Cav! Regretfully, you overdid it and ruined everything Let's see: there's nothing wrong to say you like Abba (as you can see, most of us like them, too). It shows you are in touch with your feminine side, your ying side. Shows you are a sensitive man, (that's a big score with women! ). Too bad you had to write an apology of Abba. That, my friend, is going a little bit too far! Sorry, we can't help you anymore. Ben, Jem, he is all yours!

Quiet One 15 Report post Posted June 4, 2007 Feminine? I thought they are supposed to be gay. Someone told me that Dancing Queen is the rage in gay circles. Listening to it will never be the same again Yes they are, but as long as you don't write an apology of them, it's OK to like them. Now, if you start talking about their harmonies and lyrics...you are going down the gay path Soon you will be praising Barbara Streissand, and from there you will go on to recreate at home scenes from Disney's musical movies... I recommend you an overdose of the following: Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Who (don't try to impersonate Roger Daltrey, though, that's gay!), Black Crowes, B.B.King. If it doesn't go away in two weeks give me a call and we will make another appointment.
