So Red Bull bought Cosi's 1.6L turbo, brought in Infiniti to help them tune it and will bolt it in for the Austrian GP. Wow! In the meantime, Renault look like idiots despite having powered RBR to four Championships in as many years. Clearly, world domination is the agenda and maybe now Newey will stop sulking. It beats me how they got the design so wrong in the first place. No matter, they were nearly on the pace in Sepang but now they are going to rebuild the original 2014 spec car around the new Cosi lump. Or, the Cosi had been 'bent' into a config that suits the aero design. Listen, I am no engineer but I spent a decade working for Renault in F1 and I can tell you one thing: an engine is an engine is an engine. Sure, you might be able to screw another 80 bhp out of a Cosi but you still hit the same issues with the turbo. They get bloody hot. Renault probably did not rise to the Mercedes challenge as they should have done but they will. It's what they do. This isn't about horse power, more dented pride and megalomania.

well I see it differently. Cosworth has always built good engines, but not in the last few years because I feel mainly they were only supplying "back of Field" cars. I am excited to see Cossi back into the field even if branded Red Bull who cares and well IF it can achieve 4 figure HP wow look out the rest.

Ballsy move by Red Bull but an admiral one too if it pans out as per the GPToday article may see Red Bull back in a domineering position - one they've got used to in recent years.

why not ??? Cosworth sure have loads of experience with turbo engines and no doubt they could buy the expertise with Kers stuff, but as for having it ready for Austria yeah that might be a tall order, unless of course Red Bull started this a few years back !!! nothing is impossible if you have the money.....

If Red Bull had an engine, they'd have to feed Vettel's complaints through the exhaust to have adequate noise for their driver.

Anyway, Cosworth returning to F1 isn't out of the question. Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerry Forsythe tried to sell Cosworth. No one bought it. So, they brought Zak Brown of Just Marketing (behind so, so, so many sponsor deals around the world of motorsport, including F1) to be on the board. Brown's always been linked to being a potential Bernie Ecclestone replacement. They're close.

Rumor has it that Cosworth is aggressively seeking a partner to rejoin IndyCar, and looking at F1 again. On the IndyCar front, which is irrelevant to this discussion, Mazda is big on the ladder there and Brown's Just Marketing represents Mazda's motorsports account. In F1, there are always rumors of all kinds of things, but plenty from days other than April 1 have been about Red Bull, whether that's Red Bull's own engine, Red Bull switching to Ford as was once reported, etc.

If not for the "starting at the Austrian GP" part, this one was just cruel. Give it a 2015 start date, and I'd believe it as news.

But I'll also believe it when Red Bull keeps the Infiniti backing and shows up with a Renault next year.

EDIT: One last thing about Cosworth, though, because my post was almost not unreasonably long for once.

Kalkhoven and Forsythe also own the contract to the Long Beach Grand Prix through this year. Chris Pook and Bernie Ecclestone are making a hard, hard push to get that race in 2015 from Kalkhoven and Forsythe, making it an F1 Grand Prix instead of an IndyCar/sports car/Stadium Super Trucks weekend.

So, you have to imagine there's some tension, too. The owners won't let tension get in the way if it makes sense to be in F1, but it's still fun to think of Ecclestone forcing the owners out of their big race, and then Ecclestone's buddy taking those owners back into F1 to contest the very race they lost.
