F1 Slammed By Nascar Drivers

Yes thats true but I wonder how much its because they're used to it now for so long. If F1 had never had this level of safety maybe they would not have any major problem with racing in US.

Whatever Murray, let us move on ;)

Has Sato done anything of note recently?

I actually can't remember. He's been pretty anonymous all season. Where's Senna when you need him?

Yes he hasn't done anything noteworthy since Bahrain where he destroyed his brakes. Of course a quick look at the stats shows a disastrous season unfolding:

Takuma Sato has been outraced and outqualified in every race this season and set a faster fastest lap than his teammate only once in 7 attemtps. Oh, and he has zero points after 9 races in one of the quicker cars on the grid. Even by Japanese standards this is pathetic.

Yes in fact he's probably exceeding our expectations of general ineptitude. A noteworthy performance afterall.

Yes, surprising then that although Takuma has managed to stay off the radar screens of F1 pundits he has still performed at an exceptionally low level. Quite telling of how low the expectations were that he could have such a terrible season without arounsing criticisim. If only JV were so lucky...

The last death in F1 occurred eleven years ago. The last death in NASCAR was only four years ago. In F1, there is at most one serious crash per race and usually none. In NASCAR every race has at least one serious crash. I don't buy your argument that NASCAR drivers feel safer - why would they?

Forgive the late reply, Bajo. I may not have been as clear as I intended with that (tongue in cheek) comment. My argument was not that NASCAR drivers feel safer, but perhaps that F1 drivers perceive a greater risk.

Yes, I think so. I do not think that either of the Schumachers or Giancarlo Fisichella would be willing to tolerate such a level of danger as exists in IRL, for example. Certainly Jacques Villeneuve would though.

And his skill level would be comparable too. He would be a good NASCAR driver.

Indeed, and there are other examples.

I see.

Certainly we would expect him to do better than your favorite pop-culture star/driver whose distinctive lack of ability to defend (in a series where defending against passing cars is known to be easy, in fact too easy according to widely voiced criticism) would not bode well for his chances in the pass-happy US.

You may be confusing me with young Jenson_Rules!!! However, whilst we are on the subject, would this

Statistics can be arranged to suit your purpose.  If we look at the current WDC points total we See JV outperforming JB , and he is doing it in inferior equipment.

So I suppose I could argue that an old JV is a much better driver then a young JB

     See what I mean. They don't tell the whole story.  In 2003 I don't think JV's car finished a race until about the 5th round.  You seem to like to use that comparison a lot.  Can I ask you in the name of fairness to include DNF's because of mechanical failure.  It is pretty hard to earn points when your car fails.  JB has expereinced a lot of that this year at BAR as well.

That is enough. I am starting a Button vs Villeneuve thread.

Some of the drivers have already told us this was not the case.

Bajo I would like to say that your analysis of the racing leagues is somewhat flawed. As was stated, F1, like IRL and Champ Car are single seated open cars, where the safety risk is tenfold that of Nascar. A Nascar as you know is modified street vehicle, which through even further modification is made safer by the addition of role cages and other safety implements. Much of the racing in Nascar is based around the idea that since the car can take damage and still run, the driver can feel free to as he likes with the vehicle, whether that may be bumping or slamming into other vehicles. I think one of the earlier posts was correct to identify the depriciation of skill level when one goes from F1 to Nascar. If you drive in a league where the slightest bump would either damage or incapacitate the car, why would you drive at all. Simply put, due to lack of driver skill Nascars are built to take damage. Due to the dependence on driver skill and the technical ability of the team, F1 cars are not built to take damage. For drivers in Champ and IRL to boldly claim that F1 drivers are wimps is a short sighted and somewhat ignorant claim, as all of them want to be F1 drivers. In fact if I were to do a rating of world racing leagues I would rate Nascar last in skill as, the truly brave men of the World Rally Championship, probably are only second to F! in overall skill.

Nascar drivers crash more because they place themselves in situations to crash. Aggressive and often times reckless driving, such as trying to crash out your opponent, does not equate with bravery. It is only the persistence of inferior racing skill.
