1000 Bhp For Honda

Recommended Posts

Honda may become the first Formula One engine manufacturer to break the 1000hp barrier since the turbo-powered mid eighties, the Japanese company's Takeo Kiuchi said on Wednesday.

He suggested to UK magazine 'Autosport' that the latest development of the 2004 unit, dubbed 'Suzuka Special' for Honda's home grand prix, tops the field with a clear 960hp.

Honda's F1 project leader said, even despite longer life regulations for 2005, 1000 horse power will be 'within reach' some time next season.

''There are several difficulties to conquer first,'' he told the magazine. ''But it could be possible.''

BMW, Ferrari and Toyota were thought to lead the way with the highest revving and most powerful V10 engines, but Kiuchi reckons the Honda will be F1's 'number one' in 2005.

He continued: ''The gap between this year's engine and next year's is bigger than between this year's and last year's.''

The Honda engine in Jenson Button and team-mate Takuma Sato's BAR cars in Japan will have about eight horse power more than at Shanghai, Autosport concluded.

well shame BAR will probably have second-rate drivers next year who won't be able to make best use of it (either sato/davidson/barrichello/massa)

you do realise this article is from last season!

You are right JR. My mistake. I wanted to post the following article, but messed up.

Honda intend to give F1's V10 formula a rousing farewell in China by aiming to break the 1000hp barrier with a one-off engine.

''It's possible,'' the Japanese marque's Otmar Szafnauer told Autosport magazine.

With the power boost, Honda - co-owner of Jenson Button's BAR team - hopes to fulfil the seemingly impossible pre-season team objective; to aim for 'race wins' in season '05.

F1 will revert to 2.4 ltr V8s next year.

I don't think it matters that you posted the wrong article. The story remains the same. Perhaps Honda just want to end 2005 with a bang......

I don't doubt that they can produce such an engine. I very much doubt if they can make it last for a whole weekend, though. Reminds me of the BMW qualifying grenades of the turbo era - close on 1500bhp and a life expectancy of about 3 laps.

A 3 lap engine used for quali qould be bad because it would blow up and they have a 10 position penalty, so useless is the 3 lap engine

Yes, but in the 80's you turned the wick up, got on the front row and then put in a fresh, lower powered, engine for the race. I give this 1000bhp special about 20-25 laps before the valves and pistons get intimate.

"so you could change the engine in the 80's and not get penalized?"

yep, the rule where engine changes were penalised was brought in last year. Up to then, teams could put in a stonking engine for quali and then replace it with a standard one for the race.
