Mild temperatures and a dry track greeted the drivers for this morning’s opening practice session of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend and with rain predicted of the second hour here later today, their was a lot of on track activity but the most notable for the afternoon was when the McLaren MP4-20 ground to a halt with flames shooting out of his Mercedes engine

Mclaren are awesome

In other news, usual 3rd driver blitz from Mclaren, their car is always fast for a few laps.

huge gap from top to bottom, not too many teams running anywhere near full pace.

I hope not... though the Ferrari engines would be harder for him to keep blowing up.

Kimi blows another engine.... and it's not even like he's under any pressure now. It's not surprising though. Once again the other drivers in the team can actually take care of their engines. I bet he blows one in China practice too, to give himself a new engine

If anything for Kimi, at least he can't win the title now if it's any consolation. Pretty much business as usual up top for a Friday, except for DC who did a good job this session. Interesting to see Yamamoto ahead of both Jordan drivers, although it has to be said he has a bit of an advantage as he knows the track, but nevertheless a good job in this session from Yamamoto-san.

I now think that Dennis hates Kimmi and as with Fisichella he is giving to the poor finland bad engines, surely Mclaren loves JPM and thats why Kimmi is having to much bad luck

Hehe...its happening the same to both teams or its just that at the end both drivers dont take care of their cars...

He looked a bit upset at the end of the session in the garage talking to his mechanic. No hand jesters, but not his normal blank expression either.

I guess he is just waiting to wake up and find out this year has been a bad dream. I cannot believe his luck or lack of it. It did not look like he was pushing the car that much when the fireworks started at the back of the car. Actually looked like transmission failed and locked up with all the sparks and fire from the center of the car. No smoke and flame out of either exhaust like you usually see.

As far as the new best Japanese driver, very impressed with Sakon Yamamoto's first session and he did not blow up or run into anyone, looked steady. The new star of the rising sun nation.... Takuma who???

So by that logic whenever one driver in a team has noticeably worse reliability than the other, it must be due to driver error. This is flawed logic as throughout F1

From just the in-car stuff we see on Kimi I'd say he's one of the smoothest drivers on the track to-day, he doesn't throw the car around like his team-mate does................
