Renault Ordered Fisi's Go Slow

Renault boss Flavio Briatore has confirmed that he asked Giancarlo Fisichella to block both McLaren cars during the Chinese GP.

Renault's Fernando Alonso started on pole with team mate Fisichella alongside him. Alonso was quick off the grid and was easily able to built up a good lead. He was though undoubtedly helped by Fisichella who set a far slower pace in front of both Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Looking back on the race now it is clear that Fisichella

Dont think it made much difference, Alonso was in another race to every one else the entire weekend, and would have won no matter what in the end.

The SC made the race look more competitive.

I didn't mean the slowing down cars on the way into pits though (even though the way fisi did it was probly worse then Kimi in spa), but the fact Fisi drove around the track slower, in the sole purpose of blocking Kimi and JPM! Its Ferrari like!

It looked like mclarens were only just about fast enough to keep up with Fisi anyway - its not like they were all over the back of Fisi so I don't think they were really being blocked. Kimi never got close enough to try and think about overtaking

the safety car periods skewed the results of the actual pitstops, as everyone was forced to pit on those laps..did not make sense to follow the safety car and not pit...

in reality, the mclarens well and truly might have had a lot more fuel than the renaults...just that we didnt get to see how the fuel strategies would have unfolded!

Renault boss Flavio Briatore has confirmed that he asked Giancarlo Fisichella to block both McLaren cars during the Chinese GP.

"We were racing for a World Championship, we weren't playing around," Briatore told Autosprint.

Briatore went on to say that blocking is nothing new in Formula One, and that it is part of racing. He also said he was glad to see Fisichella performing well following a poor finish at the Japanese GP a week before.

"What Fisichella did was a normal thing. His race was perfect: I asked him to block the two McLarens and he did it in the best possible way, redeeming himself from the last Japanese GP in the meantime."
