Mark Webber's reputation took a dive in 2005. Although the 29-year-old Australian won't admit that statement, his arrival at Williams - paralleled by so many to countryman Alan Jones' 1980 championship success - has been disappointing.

Not only was the FW27 car not up the task, but underrated German teammate, Nick Heidfeld, grabbed all the plaudits as the season surprise. Asked about his dimming reputation, Mark Webber admitted in an interview with Britain's Autosport magazine: "It hasn't improved, has it?"

Webber arrived at Grove from Jaguar, where his qualifying speed was matched only by his determination and race savvy. Before that, he also destroyed his teammates at Minardi. "I expected to have a lot more podiums in 2005," he now admits. "We'll just move on -- it's gone, they're not there."

Not only that, Mark has been involved in his fair share of shunts in his maiden Williams. But he won't take the blame for them all -- particularly the Turkey stoush with Michael Schumacher. Webber continued: "He f***ed up, didn't he? Ask all the other drivers."

This is what happens to those who can't live up to the hype they created themselves. As for **** ups he shouldn't blame other drivers because he is getting a good specialist in this demanding discipline.

Indeed, his sole achievment was a point for Minardi at his home GP and for this they make him out to be the next coming

for the record he got 2 point in his home gp, and held off mika salo in the faster toyota who closed up to his diffuser for many laps only to spin out when he couldn't overtake mark's minardi. he showed considerable composure in that race in his debut year.

he managed to plaec the jag on the front row when his teammates were struggling to break into the midfield.

this year was disappointing but there were a few good drives, especially towards the end of the year. he just wasn't accustomed to mixing it with the big boys. i expect a much better season in 2006 and the tyre changes will help mark as he is more suited to a sprint race style.

Just my opinion that he comes off as a bit of a whinner, and you are right he came 5th but those Toyotas couldn't get out of their own way, they were a pretty poor car...............

Didn't Martin say it was more Montoya's fault? I certainly thought it was and mark was overly hard on himself for some bizarre reason...

and you are right he came 5th but those Toyotas couldn't get out of their own way, they were a pretty poor car...............

it was still significantly faster than the Minardi though, and to make things worse the power steeering failed I think. Whilst Mark's P5 was purely down to the antics of a few at turn 1. He made the most of the opportunity and held off a 3 second a lap faster car and did not make a mistake. The only sad thing is that is was blown way way way out of proportion by some.

Oh, and I'm not a Mark Webber fan, far from it, but he did a pretty good job that race, I will admit that.

yes a minardi is still a minardi no matter how bad the toyotas were that year! and yes the power steering failed in the race.

agree with what shaun said above re the jpm incident.

mark's preputation has taken a hammering, only if you believed he was world champ material at the start of the year. untill monaco arguably his best achievement was that drive in the minardi at melbourne, so one could also say he has improved markedly. it all depends on what you buy into re his "reputation". he's always been known as a good qualifier and continued to qualify well. he should be a much better racer next year.

Granted this year Webber had a poor season but if you look at Webber's record then you will relise that it is his first bad season. In Minardi he impressed alot of people and in Jaguar he consistantly beat his teammates and did better than what people expected of the car. In all his time at Minadi and Jaguar he beat all of his teammates.

His last few races were good. I just think it took him awhile to get used to battling drivers of a higher ability than the ones he used to fight in Minardi and Jaguar.

I grant you that he drove well in the last few races but he'll still be the same predictable Mark Webber next season....

Which is start season well, poor for the middle part and then strong again at the end.

Which helps to explain how he has accumulated 3 disqualifications in just 85 races (he is very lucky to have just three!).
