Renault team principal Flavio Briatore reckons that Fernando Alonso's championship-winning season has proved he knows what he is talking about when it comes to Formula 1.

The business-minded former Benetton executive became the only principal to lead two different teams to championship glory when Alonso crossed the line in Brazil.

An extraordinary feat when you consider Briatore claims to know little about the inner workings of a car.

"When we took him (Alonso) in 2002, yes, I was sure he was ready for the Renault car and to be competitive," he said.

"At the time, I had let Jenson Button leave and many people said that I knew nothing about Formula 1.

"Now I think we have shown I understand a little bit."

Briatore, who masterminded Michael Schumacher's two first championships at Benetton, claims that Alonso's talent was obvious from an early stage.

"When we decided to put Fernando in the car, we knew he was a special guy," he said.

Apparently Webber was offered a race seat at Renault for this year, but chose Williams.

I was a Senna supporter but my elder brother was a Mansell one... We had a lot of arguments about that, bloody b#####d, i think he used to say Mansell was the best just in order to make me grumpy (only a mad person could say that seriously )
