SILVERSTONE CORNERS FACE AXE

ITV

Silverstone is likely to lose three of its fabled corners if plans to redevelop the Northamptonshire venue are given the go-ahead next week.

Circuit owner British Racing Drivers Club will convene on Wednesday to discuss whether to grant a 150-year lease to developer St Modwen Properties, which plans to build residential homes on the 800-acre site.

Details of specific housing plots have not yet been released, but the Daily Telegraph reports that they would be accommodated by cutting out Club, Abbey and Bridge corners and moving the circuit to the east.

Although the configuration of these three corners have been changed over the years

...Circuit owner British Racing Drivers Club will convene on Wednesday to discuss whether to grant a 150-year lease to developer St Modwen Properties, which plans to build residential homes on the 800-acre site...

And in some years, some owners of those residential homes will complain about the "horrible" noise that racing cars do, so they will want to close the circuit... :(

yep to me it seems the END of Silverstone.. I have spent MANY hours at that track and I gotta say IMO is maybe the best, not only for nostalgia, but for pure speed !!!

Housing conglomerates near a Race Track ??? No way

This is bad news indeed. It's exactly the kind of thing that has scuppered Brands Hatch as a Grand Prix venue, too. Looks like we'll be off to Rockingham, then.

I feel your pain. The accursed place is only a leisurely 15 minute drive from chez gorilla, and I have been there twice, I am ashamed to say. A soulless place.

i have always said this, Brands Hatch is better by a long way! But a F GP could not happen unless its completely revamped and the track widened!

It would be a joke if Britain doesn't have a GP, preferably at Silverstone.

They're redeveloping it. Should reopen in April. The inner circuit is pretty good, though - much better than the Indy f1 layout. I went there for a track day (40th b'day pressie from the g/f). It's just that the place has no atmosphere at all.

Ah. Just realised you were talking about Mallory. Stupid Gorilla.

BRDC DELAYS SILVERSTONE DECISION

ITV

35886_1.jpg

Plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of Silverstone have been put on hold by circuit owner the British Racing Drivers Club.

At an Extraordinary General Meeting held at Silverstone yesterday, BRDC members forced the postponement of a vote on a contentious proposal to lease the circuit to property developer St Modwen for 150 years.

The deal would see the former RAF training base converted into a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility with a luxury hotel and residential housing being built on the 800-acre Northamptonshire site.

BRDC president Sir Jackie Stewart and chairman Stuart Rolt urged members to support the proposal as the only means of retaining the British Grand Prix beyond the end of the current contract in 2009.

But a significant number of BRDC members have misgivings about signing away their rights to the land and handing over the running of the circuit to Northern Racing for a 25-year period.

Prior to the meeting, Sir Stirling Moss expressed his concern that the full implications of the plans had not yet been made clear.
