An American Formula 1 Fan In Paris

Recommended Posts

Since I'll be in Paris the weekend of the Grand Prix of Monaco, I look forward to seeing if there is any difference in the French coverage of F1 (vs. what you find here in the U.S.). If I didn't have prior standing engagements, I would take the train down for the day just to wander around the city (since I can't afford Monaco's ticket prices).

Since I don't read, speak, or understand French, I can only imagine that it will be even more exciting than normal. :eusa_think:

i've seen French F1 coverage when I was on holiday in Nice a few years ago. I'm sorry to say that its terrible. There's no pre-race show, plus of course its all in french!

Hmm. Should be interesting to see Paris so soon after Sarkozy's election - though I guess he won't have actually taken office then. You can learn a bit of very basic French for restaurants etc on the plane over! I'll be interested to learn how you think the price of restaurant food in France compares to the US. In terms of food quality I think France is unbeatable, except by Italy!

The coverage is crap too! I remember watching the France-v-Ireland 6 Nations match & I had to watch in a 14X9 small scren view so you're pretty unlucky StoneIsland! Desserts & bread are good though!

Hmm, don't look forward to the TV coverage. If you don't speak French, it'll suck. And, even if the commetators spoke English, Varsha, Hobbs, Matchett, and Windsor are the best set of commetators I've ever heard in my life, so I doubt it would be that special compared to them (I think I don't whine about F1 being boring because no race is boring with David Hobbs...)

As for being in Paris in general, I've only left the States twice, so can't help you on that one.

I agree with your thoughts on Varsha, Matchett, Windsor and the very irreverent but relevant Hobbs. My only thought is that the French will no doubt treat you like sh!t and you'll be glad to kiss American soil when you get back.

I dont know where this stereotype came from but ive had several relatives go to France in the past few years and they have nothing but praise for not only the country but also the people.

you'll be glad to kiss American soil when you get back.

I dont think i would want to kiss soil at, no matter what country it came from :D

Yup, I was joking. Sorry ykick...

I've never been to Paris, so I really can't comment on it. Probably a nice enough place and one that's used to tourists. Have fun!

I got the humor on the dirt-kissing, but your comment on the French read like a serious rubuttal of my joke. No worries.

Bah. Some Aussie came to California and brought it back to Oz with him.

And some of his expressions have rubbed off on you. Still my favourite Australian expression off all time is easily "AV A GO YA MUG" but unfortunately its so rearly used in modern society :D

I think the word mate is more English than Australian as both nations use the word but i think the English started using it first.

I just assumed that England started using it first as England has been a HUGE influence on Australia's culture but Australia's culture hasnt had much of a influence on English culture. Also England as a western society has been around alot longer than Australia.
