To be honest Shampion, I'm sick of her comments about, "why can't they all just drive the same car then you'd know who's best". So I call her 'Max' and suggest she watches a Formula Ford race. For example, let's say the your benchmark is the WCC (arguable? On this forum,yes ), then McLaren might be 3% slower, Toro Roso 15%, Honda 12% etc etc. The theory being that it would be as close as you could get for every driver in the same car. That is the kind of angle that I am looking at (in a way). The problem that I face is more of a chikcen and egg variety. I need to know where each driver starts from in order to calculate how their team mate fared, but I need to know how they fared in order to find out where they started from...... I think one issue is that it has much to radical swings from year to year, for instance, Jensen dropped from 19.2 to -.8 in one year, and it was not due to his 'driver skill' degrading that horribly. However, if you add up the point totals, the results are interesting.. then Jensen's swing doesn't seem so bad, he 'gained' skill points each year, but lost a bit of 'skill' points in 2007... using this method (omitting 2001) the totals are thus: M Schumacher = 155.3 (added 2007 @ average of 25.9) Alonso = 125.0 Raikkonen = 108.4 Button = 66 Webber = 38.8 R Schumacher = 35.8 Heidfeld = 35.6 Barrichello = 33.8 Trulli = 29.8 Fisi = 29.4 Coulthard = 24.6 Sato = -2.2 Not enough data for these guys... Massa Montoya Villeneuve It seems reasonable this way... One thing, you must consider that being on a team with Schumacher or Alonso does not mean you suck, and it would appear this method inherantly penalizes your skill if your teammate is better than you.
