Senna

Schumacher, Barrichello And Webber

Recommended Posts

from f1central.net:

Mark Webber is the third best grand prix driver in the world.

That's the finding of countryman and Williams' 1980 world champion Alan Jones, who ranked the 28-year-old from Australia behind only Ferrari's Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.

''I can't see a single thing wrong with this guy,'' he said in a personal ranking of 2004's top ten drivers for UK magazine Autosport. ''Who else, other than Michael Schumacher, can you say that about?''

58-year-old Jones said Webber 'carried' Jaguar through 'another s##tty year.'

Schumacher, meanwhile - Alan explained - has been the best of all ever since Ayrton Senna died, and reckons Mark, Kimi Raikkonen or Juan Pablo Montoya could only 'give him trouble' if Ferrari drop their game.

Everyone was talking up Raikkonen while he was at sauber, its not like he was wiinning GP's or getting podiums....but they still did it to him?

i agree it is a bit rich to rank him ahead of kimi, jpm, alonso and even button, but he has done wonders with that jag in qualifying. it's hard to prove your worth in a sh*t car in a race, but quali is the one area where a driver can show his talent.

don't forget aj is a williams man through and through, so that has an influence on his judgement, and if frank and patrick rate mark highly it follows that aj has similar sentiments.

what is also interesting is that 3 years ago when channel 9 had coverage of the sport here in aus and aj was a presenter he didn't rate webber at all. gradually webber started to rise in his estimations, and now he is the 3rd best driver in f1. he obviously sees the talent and webber's growth, and expects the results will follow. he has watched mark closely for a while and his reputation has built up. i can't wait for 2005, and as mark himself has said we'll see how fast he really is next year.

in 2004 JPM was becoming a has been. and it dont matter if Webber has wopn a race yet or not he is still the 3rd best driver in F1 and if not the 2nd best because i think hes beter than RB.

and hay that coming from a World Champ who raced back when the driver drove the car 100% and not just 50% and well no one here can say that they have more to do with F1 than AJ has.

his choice of second and third best drivers really astonishes me. I thought Button did a better job than both of those guys this year.

Picking Barrichello was obviously a mistake, i don't rate his opinion highly due to it.

i don't think he was rating their 2004 season as such, but nevertheless...

i also would have liked to see the rest of his list.

I agree alot with Taku on this subject. Alan Jones was very critical of Webber in the early years and has come to respect MW for his rise through the ranks. I sat next to Alan Jones a few months ago on a plane flight from Sydney to melb and he very rarely commends anything let alone anyone. I did ask him about Mark Webber and whether he would be driving for Williams next year (this was before the announcments of course), he stated that MW did deserve a shot in a good team and he also thought that David Coulthard was also in with a good chance of the drive, but he thought MW has more to offer Williams than DC at this stage in his career.

I tend to think that Michael Schumacher is in the best car and with the best set of engineers and tacticians which makes his job so much better. The ferrari engine is near bulletprrof and their aero is first rate, next year will be interesting in that pit stop staetgies will have a lesser influence on the outcome ofd the race, so more emphasis will be on the driving which could help Schuey more if he doesnt make mistakes, but as he has shown this year he makes mistakes when put under pressure.

barrichello is a good driver but the second best?? (he is in the best car, sure), but on driving ability again under pressure he is susceptible.

Kimi too has been seen to make mistakes when pressured (silverstone when barrichello drove his best race ever).

Of the current drivers I would rate:

Schuey

Kimi

JPM

Button

Alonso

Rubens

Webber (not on ability but the fact he hasnt had a race winning car yet)

I learned from my biology teacher that Quantitative (numerical) data is better than qualitative (word) data, so here ya go:

Record Senna Schumacher

WDC 3 7

Wins 41 83 (more than double)

Fastest Laps 19 65

Poles 65 63

I think the numbers speak for themselves...

AS I'VE SAID BEFORE WEBBER IS JUST TOO OLD TO BECOME A SUPERSTAR LIKE SCHUMACHER....SENNA BEGAN WINNING AT 24,SCHUMACHER AT 23,MONTOYA AT 25...ALONSO IS THE YOUNGEST EVER RACE WINNER AT 21....WEBBER IS 29 AND HAS NEVER HAD A SINGLE PODIUM FINISH,HE CAN WIN RACES FOR SURE NOW...BUT HE'S TOO OLD TO IMPROVE HIS SKILL.

REGARDING BARRICHELLO,HE WAS A VERY QUICK DRIVER IN HIS EARLY YEARS BUT AFTER THE SENNA TRAGEDY HE NEVER LOOKED TO BE THE SAME.HE IS QUICK FOR SURE AND SPECIALLY IN WET CONDITIONS..BUT SOMEONE WHO SAYS THAT HIS TEAMMATE IS BETTER THAN HIM IS NO MORE A TOP DRIVER...I THINK BARRICHELLO IS IN THE SAME LEAGUE OF COULTHARD AND JV RIGHT NOW....BUT WHO CARES OF VETERANS?THEY ARE NOT THE FUTURE BUT THE PAST OF THE SPORT.

Barichello is the 2nd best driver in F1, he was just born abit too soon and to have had MS as a team mate has not helped. MS says the day RB starts to out-qualify him consistently then he will hang up his steering wheel.

All drivers including RB want to beat the best driver, that for now is MS. Nobody wants to be the 2nd best driver and it's the worst place to be. But were anything to happen to MS then FA,KR,JPM,MW et al would suddenly find their hands very full with the prospect of beating RB, he would be the next champion, but the longer MS stays on the more his chances disappear!!

I learned from my biology teacher that Quantitative (numerical) data is better than qualitative (word) data, so here ya go:

Record  Senna  Schumacher

WDC            3                7

Wins          41              83 (more than double)

Fastest Laps 19          65

Poles            65            63

I think the numbers speak for themselves...

You left out the number of races each have raced. Only with that can you draw a comparison. But even with that there were drivers like Prost, Mansell etc........ all fighting Senna. But nobody fights MS on track now. He wins by over 20 seconds form his team-mate and around a lap from the rest barring a few races.

The records are very misleading indeed. Michael has the best car, has always been in a very good one and more often than not the very best, he is the contractual number one at Ferrari, has always had weak team-mates who help him from day one, he cracks under intense pressure and looses concentration under little pressure etc. In fact the only area in which Schumacher was better than Senna was in physical fitness.

come next year we will see just how good webber is. if he wins the first race then maybe he might just be the 3rd best in the world.

so exactly how many races have schumacher and senna raced in?and how many years has each been in f1? i need this information to make a better comparison. can someone give a comparison of i think its 10 years for each one so we can see the stats?

it is true to say that michael doesnt really have a team mate that consistantly challenges him like prost and senna when mclaren were peaking.

sorry i seem to misunderstand? senna never made mistakes? and no mistakes under pressure? he is great there is no doubt, but ive read of him having accidents on his own!! hes made plenty of mistakes just as have all the drivers but people have made this invincibility around him which isnt true.

i have to admit i am f1 fan towards the end of his life but if he had not died would he be such a legend as he is? dont get me wrong he has the biggest balls!!

each one is the best in their time.

Rubens is better than JV, FA, MW, JPM, KR. If he were available to sign, Williams would pick him instead of MW and Maclaren would pick him instead of JPM and make him lead driver, Renault pick him to be lead driver. He can take the game to them any time. He would be the best driver if MS drops out - he would not be able to dominate the others as totally as MS but he would still clinch it. JV has had his time (and like I keep saying he is a former champ - so hats off to the guy). But there is very little left in JV's tank, we however need his character to spice up F1.
