Jerez: Heidfeld wins Williams battle

Nick Heidfeld came out on top in a head-to-head testing showdown with Williams rival Antonio Pizzonia at Jerez on Thursday.

The pair are battling it out for a race seat with Williams but after lengthy sessions in Spain, Heidfeld ended the day with the fastest time.

Testing times are difficult to interpret but Heidfeld's time, just over a 10th of a second quicker than his Brazilian rival, will have brought a smile to the German's face.

Toyota's Ricardo Zonta set the quickest time overall, followed closely by the McLarens of Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya, who finished second and third respectively on their first outing together.

The Williams duo followed in fourth and fifth while Jenson Button was down in ninth for BAR.

Heidfeld has had the edge on him, no doubt about it..I don't know what they were testing but to be honest I don't think Williams didn't give both them the chance to make a quick lap,if they are to evaluate them..however this is the most stupid shoot out I've ever seen...an experienced and qucik driver who has won everything in junior classes and had strong races in F.1 against a test driver who has struggled in F.3000,struggled and got sacked at Jaguar and has a 7th place as a best result in a Williams and is also less experienced...

Even the BMW is not the sole best engine, many experts now count Ferrari, Toyota and Honda as keeping right up with the Beamers, even beating them to upgrades on occasion.

Ok for what concerns Pizzonia..but if Webber and Heidfeld are average they are as average as Barrichello,JV,Coulthard or Ralf Schumacher right now...I think Webber is hugely overrated and Heidfeld has not so impressed as he did in F3 or F.3000..but it's also true that a lot of average drivers have driven for top teams winning races, and sometime championships in the last decade (see Damon Hill,JV himself and nearly Irvine..

It's the same JV, just without the equipment, or at least he hasn't had the equipment lately. Talking about average drivers in top cars, Id say Rubens and Ralf have done very little in their big stints in top teams, whilst JV is a level above Ralf, Rubens and DC. If JV, Kimi, Montoya or Fisi were in that Ferrari they'd have run M$ alot closer than Rubens has, if they were allowed to that is.

I think too that heidfeld is better than webber...however..you seems not to understand me..I'm not saying that JV has always been average,when he was a rookie he really impressed me..but I think the BAR experience has really stressed him cause by 2001 onwards he seems very average...

Ferrari have more power than BMW, look how their seasons went. I think up until Suzuka 2003 BMW had the edge on power.

If Nick was miles faster than Pizzonia, I decision would have been reached very quickly. To let it go on till now means there isn''t much between them - this suggests that factors other than driving ability will come to play!

It will probably be like that because, Williams has to have a rebuilding year due to two new drivers. McLaren, they have onyl one new driver, but those two (Kimi and Montoya) will have to learn how to work with each other.

To say that both Webber and Heidlfeld are average drivers is very subjective, considering that neither have ever been in a competitive team before and thus have not shown their real worth. I hope that both get a great FW27 chassis to really show the teams competitiveness and their relative skills.

Webber has already made Pizza boy look second rate at Jaguar, williams would be crazy to take him on.

Webber is above average. He is above Rubens and most of the field, but i dont know that williams will be there this year
