To Save F1, What Needs To Be Done ?

Will there even be F1 fans left by the time they change engines again ?

Formula 1 set for noisier, cheaper engines in 2021

My bone feeling is that these kind of decisions are inline with the old "placing cart in the front of a horse". I thought that product definition should have been settled with a few other basic parameters (knowing your clientele, sporting content, frequency/locations, broadcast delivery tools, etc.) There has to be convergence between sport promoters with current and new entrants, and only after major sporting regulations and the product begins to shows some form and depth, only then we should be talking about technical details and how to convert theoretical research into reality.

That, in a nutshell, would be my approach. It infuriates me to read we should be building nosier motors. What kind of such nonsense goal serious people would even contemplate? Young generation is being educated how polluted earth is, and why we need to change our life-styles, yet here we engage in generation of more noise and lighting pollution (evening races) and tell the same people its all good. Nothing makes much sense anymore. Future clientele are in their teens today. Do they really care about such traits as noisy motors? I doubt that.

Why can't they just pick something and stay with it? These constant rule changes are a joke, no other sport anywhere on the planet goes through the the rule changes the f1 does.

I agree to both of you. People/fans can't get used of the sport's constant change. F1 teams themselves are having a hard time coping up with the rules that affects the fan's interests. Meanwhile other sports pretty much remain as it was and everyone knows the rules and can follow with enthusiasm.

As Sakae pointed out also, with all these environmental consciousness , how can F1 cars cop up with it in the future while keeping the fan's interest is the big challenge.

F1 may be a dieing sport, Formula E may be the future...

Marchionne already indicated that Ferrari will built presence in E-series for long run, and it would not surprise me if Malone pi**s red people bad enough, he might end up having to learn living without Ferrari when new CA will be not accepted by Maranello.

Just look at all the big names joining/intrested in FE. There going straight past f1 to fe as sadly as it seems, will be the future of openwheel racing at this stage.

Ecclestone knew too well where money is. Chasing manufacturers out of the F1 and fielding 18 cars Manor-type will probably not pay...

We should really envisage and foresee what Formula 1 should be in five years, in ten years. And starting from there, probably decide what should be the rules in five years, so we allow teams to prepare that rather than overreacting."

Great minds think alike? :D

It's not mind controlling. It's entertainment - value for their money.

Not all fans knows too well about cars running at 300KPH, they just wanna be entertained.

It is already being done: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/7550007/taylor-swift-formula-1-grand-prix-austin-concert-calvin-harris

It drew 80,000 fans to the concert !!!

Good move. Did nothing to damage F1.

Perhaps I should be an ambassador for F1 ;)

Grosjean didn't go - that's not his kind of music, he said. (That's all I can remember about that event).

It was her only concert of the year, so it did make the news here (but the race did not!). Anyhow, you probably don't match the demographics of her core audience.

How very right you are.

we get the same here in Australia come race time. All year round, not a word on f1 or Ricciardo for that matter (being the only Aussie). But when the GP comes around or he does well in the race, they cover it like they know the sport in and out and what is going on etc, etc. I actually wrote a letter to them last week, just letting the paper know that where I live in Australia, it might suprise them that there is actually some people out there who don't like football or cricket.

I did Motorsport.com survey, and let them know how to fix the thing we call it the F1.B)

Do I think the survey is good? No, in fact I think end-result will throw some people on a wrong track. I have no doubt that certain groups are represented in greater numbers, and result can be skewed accordingly. (It would not surprise me to learn that Brits who have taken survey were in triple numbers over Germans and so on). As a way of example, on a one forum I used to frequent, fans of Vettel almost all left the site, tired of nonsensical statistics flaunted in their faces, defamatory rhetoric and daily wars of words. There was no discussion anymore possible, and people left in disgust, tired of it. I know at least two such fans who do not even engage in such surveys as I have done this evening.

This forum is running anti-Hamilton's thread, yet according to said survey, he is at the lead as the most popular guy. So much for surveys. Not sure what they prove other than that we are different with our likes and dislikes. That's what makes us homo sapiens.

Indeed.

F1 will get nowhere until the results of the survey are corrected. So either all haters rush to "opine" or the survey must be completely and utterly ignored.

It's simple guys, the power and control has to go to someone who has actually raced in f1 before, not some pen pushing prick behind a desk. That's the first and IMO most major thing that needs to be corrected, after that, everything else should slot nicely into place if common sense and experience from actually racing in the series prevails over corporate greed.

I don't know who else has bothered with the survey, but there was a question which driver you like, as opposed to which driver you hate, and I am not apologetic for not voting like a herd-sheep.  BTW, when I was at it, Alonso and Hamilton were neck and neck in popularity, while Kimi third, and Sebastian not too far behind and forth. It seems that not too many are really connoisseurs of good stuff when they see it, but I've never assumed everyone would be. Ricciardo had a massive popularity drop in comparison to the previous survey.

Result of survey to be ignored is my recommendation as well, and I think F1 governing body has done exactly that last time around. However there is one question of which I would like them to take notice of, namely, expand broadcast beyond TV, and make it available also on You Tube on my Notebook. Internet is widely available around the globe, whereas TV broadcast is not.

Surveys are so bogus as answers are generally affected by how the individual feels at the time.
