Webber: Williams Should Dump Bmw

Williams should turn their back on BMW at the end of the season and start afresh with a new engine supplier, claims current driver Mark Webber.

In the wake of BMW's announcement that they are buying Sauber and will run their own team in Formula One in 2006, Webber believes Williams would be better off forging a completely new direction rather than accepting life as BMW's second-string team.

When asked by Autosport-Atlas about whether the team should continue with BMW or make a clean break, Webber said emphatically: "Clean break.

"That is just what I think. BMW have done it (bought Sauber) for a reason and I have got a lot of respect for them. I have been here only five minutes compared to them, because I arrived while the whole thing was rolling, but for the team I think it could be better to have a new start."

Williams are already understood to have had talks with Toyota, Honda and Cosworth about a deal for next year, although BMW themselves have said they would be happy to continue supplying engines to the team.

Webber added that he was not too concerned about the future and said he had faith that team owners Frank Williams and Patrick Head would sort the situation out.

"This (the BMW deal) wasn't part of the programme, there is no question about that for me," he explained. "I have got a lot of trust in Frank and Patrick. It is not ideal because you want harmony within a team, but I have been through tougher times before and Frank is a fantastic individual.

"We have got to find a way to get better results next year, even if it is with BMW. It is not a question of recovering but making sure that we can turn things around and get in a position to be strong."

For once I agree. This guy thinks hes god's gift to F1, infact hes never acheived a championship in any series let alone F1. What a waste of space!

Jenson knows hes a good driver, whats wrong with that, hes proven much more in the sport than Webber!

How so? by grabbing podiums in the 2nd best car on the grid? Webber did it with about the 4th or 5th best car. Well done JR, oh and have you looked through Webbers career outside, F1, or should i bring in the facts for you?

You don't have to follow/support a driver based one how good you think they are, or are going to be, thats a very shallow look on things. If this was the case everyone should of been supporting Schumacher for the best part of a decade.

I disagree I'm afraid, I think MW is showing a positive attitude and strong solidarity for the williams team when it is needed most.

He has gone up in my estimation as an individual, although the jury is still out on his driving ability

i take it non of you webber bashers even read the whole article? i don't know how you can sense that he believes he's God's gift to f1 from that article at all. he expressed an opinion about the bmw and williams situation in no better words than i could desribe my self. he also humbly stated that he's only been in the team for 5 minutes compared to bmw, but in his opinion for the team it would be better for a clean break.

so get off the bandwagon and read what he actually said instead of plain rubbishing him. he never rubbished bmw's name indirectly, in fact he spoke highly of them.

I don't see anything wrong with what he has said. As for Webber v Button in their pre-F1 careers, I know Webber has won a few races here and there (British F3, F3000), but no titles, does anyone have JB's record pre-F1??

He won british karts, of some sort, and then some english Formula ford to my understanding. He was 3rd in F3 in England.
