bajo39 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2005 why wouldnt this surprise me, it seems to me from all the news coverage that the Blacks were the worst affected, why is this? please fill me in, i though america stood for equality, clearly still pretty divided! The inner city of New Orleans, much like that of many big American cities, is filled with poor blacks. They are always the worst affected by natural disasters. It would be the same if a hurricane hit London except your minorities would be all sorts of colours...

Null 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2005 wouldn't they be the worst affected because generally, the black population are largely immigrant families coming to look for work as america offers them higher prospects, they generally have less money and so, generally, their standard of living is poorer, therefore they can't afford better housing and their land tends to be cheap and in high risk areas. oh crap, I just found out bajo beat me to it
cavallino 2 Report post Posted September 22, 2005 nop KSS its not that. Their families have been in the Us for hundreds of years. Its the deep south, that was only desegregated 30 something years ago. before that it was like apartheid south africa. That is why they are still much poorer. Most black Americans are American-born, not foreign-born... They are the worst affected because they are the least likely to evacuate and have adequate supplies. They also have the worst housing but not necessarily in the most risky areas as those would be along the seas and thus expensive.

Kennye 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2005 Is it my imagination or is the ignorance of certain members becoming more pronounced?? Pump, I agree with you, thankfully most of them (like JR) are still riding the school bus so there is still a chance for them to become educated before grow up and getting into the real world. . Anyway, I hope that Indy will be dropped soon in favour of a generally better race track. I just hope next years will be a decent event. I agree CC, loved going to Indy for the experience and fanfare, but very boring bring on a track with turns and elevation changes. Something to get the heart rate of the drivers up. Yeah...Tony George is guilty!! USA most have a lot of better tracks for F1... ECAP, Tony George is guilty of what? He might be a road course biggot, but????? The inner city of New Orleans, much like that of many big American cities, is filled with poor blacks. They are always the worst affected by natural disasters. It would be the same if a hurricane hit London except your minorities would be all sorts of colours... The news reports only showed you the poor blacks because it stirs everyone up. There were MANY white Hispanics and other races also affected by this disaster, but that does not score rating points. It has to be a controversial or made to look controversial for the news organizations to show it. This was not a race thing, this was a have vs have not thing. The city, state government did not take care of them to start with and then the feds fell on their face by not picking up the slack fast enough. BTW, the only way the floods could have been prevented was to have doubled the size of the levees surrounding the city and that was never planned on. As I have stated in another thread, the local levee commission used the levee money to build multi lane overpasses to make it easier to get to the riverboat casino's (close to 300 million) and another 1.5 million of a pretty fountain so don't talk about the feds spending money on war instead of the levees causing or contributing to the disaster. Kennye 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2005 He is guilty for destroying the best international open wheel series that was INDY CAR, by creating his IRL trash... OH, I thought you meant he had something to do with the almost USGP. I totally agree, he screwed up open wheel racing here in North America (I am of course including your country and Canada). Open wheel could have been almost as popular as box car racing if it was not for him. BAJO, Thanks, guess next week we will be seeing the same pictures from Texas after Rita comes through. I feel sorry for the NO folks that were moved to Texas and now have to evacuate again.... How much can those folks stand...

CCWS is on the rise though and if the two series do not unite again, I think we will see CCWS dominate and reach or surpass the level it had reached before. I certainly hope so anyway. I don't think we will see the same pictures again. The government (federal, state, local and all related agencies including the military, Coast Guard, FEMA, etc) seem to be well prepared. I note that Glaveston, the projected landing point for Rita, is 90% evacuated and the entire city is above land - that bodes well also. The only concern I have is the strength of the hurricane. Rita is considerably more powerful than Katrina and it may not weaken before touching down
