BUTTON ON TOP AT BARCELONA

Jenson Button came back with a bang when he set the fastest time of the third day's testing at Barcelona.

The Briton's time of 1m14.109s, set with a 2005-spec V10 Honda, was slightly misleading however as the six teams present continued with their various 2.4-litre V8 programmes.

Renault's Franck Montagny was second quickest, also in a '05-spec car while the team's other test driver Jose Maria Lopez impressed with in third.

Christian Klien was fourth for Red Bull in his Cosworth V10-powered RBR-1.

Jarno Trulli seemed happier with his new Toyota after completing 66 laps and setting the fastest V8 time ahead of his team-mate Ricardo Zonta.

Nick Heidfeld was seventh fastest as BMW concluded its first test as a team owner.

"It was important that we could run the BMW P86 engine in the Sauber chassis at this early stage, in order to intergrate all the technical systems," said motorsport director Mario Theissen.

"This is the beginning of the testing season and there is naturally a lot of work to be done. The co-operation at the track as the well as the preparation of the interim chassis went very well

we cant read much into those times as he was using a v10

Indeed but at least it gives us something else to talk about, i.e. it is not about moderators.

Are BAR planning to sneak a V10 into next year's car perhaps?

Perhaps an extra, hidden, V10, in a secret compartment to compliment the regulation V8. If Nick Fry has truly gone "green" with the V8, they will need a proper, second engine to actually power the car.

I am ashamed that Nick Fry is a fellow Brit. Please note how this fact does not shield him from criticism.

Indeed. It will make or break Fry's reputation.

How many times does he have to get caught for cheating before his reputation is broken?

Montagny used a V10 too, am I right?

Did Nick Fry have a positive reputation at any stage in his career? He was chosen by Honda: enough said.

 I fear for Honda still running the V-10 when all others of importance are running the V-8's, this will surely hold them back...........

Hay, Red Bull are still running their V-10. I would consider them to be a important team, they nearly beat BAR in the constructors championship and they also nearly got on the podium several times during the season.

I'm talking of teams expected to fight for the WCC, and Red Bull isn't there yet.

pay attention to davidson's time. the v8 is almost 5 sec off! however the good news is it is also faster than the cosworth, which did a whole race distance.

Are BAR planning to sneak a V10 into next year's car perhaps?

what are bar up to? button used the restricted v10 in 2 different 2004 cars with different aero. i wonder if they really are murray?

having arguably the most powerful v10 last year i'm sure it would pay to see how it goes with restrictions. 5 sec faster is a sizeable difference notwithstanding the diff aero packages. i wonder how quickly the fia will issue a 'clarification' on the engine restriction.

hmmm bar being naughty again! tbh i think the engine button used was a full on V10, not a restricted one!

davidson was technically 2 seconds off the pace as trulli was the fastest in a V8! For their first outing it isnt too bad, toyota have been testing v8s at every test since the summer! So withing about a month you'll start seeing teams more equal with their v8's, once they get them to work and understand them! I personally think renault are making a huge mistake not bringing out their v8 till next year! BIG BIG mistake imo, it needs as much track time as possible!

not a mistake jst that their present car is designed for 74 degree v angle and ......the new regs state 90 degrees ,and as always they optimise their resources...

even this season they shifted from 110 deg to 74 deg.,and started testing on the new spec only in jan ,look where they finished....
