FIA president Max Mosley has voiced concerns that the new qualifying system to be adopted in Formula 1 next season will confuse the public.

In place of the current single-car format there will be two 15-minute knock-out stints, each eliminating five drivers, followed by a 20-minute shoot-out for pole between the surviving contenders.

There will also be different rules regarding the fuel drivers must carry into Sunday

I'm still expecting qualifying to be changed again before the start of the season or half way through.

One hour, 12 laps, 4 sets of tyres, low fuel. Oh, didn't we do that once before? All they have to do is ensure all cars do one run in each quarter hour segment. Easy. Stand aside Max, and let me through!

Yeah, it's a very complicated system and I also don't like it. I like monza gorilla's method and would be very happy with that.

Another suggestion is a format that is simliar to the current one in use but much better. It's simple and uncomplicated. Run all cars light with no restrictions on race day fuel loads. Let each driver have two consecutive hot laps in qualifying and take the quickest of the two. Now this is a pure form of qualifying since everyone will be on the same fuel load and driver skill under pressure will be required to place well. It's also uncomplicated and easy to understand for the fan and the TV executives should love it since they will be able to broadcast all teams qualifying in an hour long time slot.

It should shut-up the critics and some drivers who didn't like the 1 hot lap quali system we had this year since if a driver messes up his 1st lap than he still gets a second kick-at-the-can to put in a quick one on his 2nd lap. It's one thing to screw up on one lap but there is no excuse at the F1 level to screw up two consecutive laps! If a driver messes up his 2nd lap than he deserves to be at the back of the grid even though I know some of the current crop of drivers in F1 will screw up both laps.

The other factor that will help the drivers using this format is the tyre temperatures, since some have complained that there is not adequate time to properly warm the tyres to optimum race temps under the one lap quali method. Having that 2nd lap will bring the tyres up to the optimal performance level and increase grip! Theoretically, the driver's 2nd lap should be the fastest since he will have a little less fuel and much warmer tyres. There are no excuses for drivers under this format. In addition, non of this nebulous crap of trying to figure out who was running heavy or light stuff. Everyone qualis on an equal playing field with the same fuel strategies. No one can say I was held up on my hot lap excuse. I think I hate that excuse more than anything and it seems too easy a crutch for drivers to use when they in fact screwed up on their own!

I'm willing to give this quali format a go before knocking it, but it does sound confusing for the F1 novice. As with most others, the pre '03 format was straight forward and add the clause that monza gorilla mentioned about making teams run in each 15 minute bracket, then there will be action all the way through!

i'm quite interested in seeing the new system. it should be a significant improvement on last year. it's kind of pointless yarning for the old system and comparing this new 'confusing' one with the pre-2003 system as this system was a choice between it and teh 2005 system, not the pre-2003 system. i'll give it a few races before passing judgement.

This quali sounds rubbish. Haug should teach F1 about DTM quali. Then there would be no disputes about qualifying for years. IT'S SIMPLE. Bloody hell, I wish I could just walk right up to them and propose a DTM style qualification method. It would stop all of this nonsense.
