Button not a top-line driver

Watson and Symonds give their view

Pressure on Button to get the job done in 2006

Jenson Button is not one of Formula One's top three drivers, according to two experts.

The first expert is John Watson, the Ulsterman who won five Grand Prix in the 70s and 80s, who said Button should have won at least one or two of his 102 career starts by now.

Because Britain is the epicentre of motorsport we feel that British drivers should come under the spotlight more than others. What sickens me about the British mentality is our blame culture and our apparent inability to say anything positive about our sports people.

Yes, this year is pivotol for Button but for christs sake shut up until the year's out.

It's not old news... it was posted today :D

And it's not slagging Button off. It never says he is a bad driver. it just says he is not in the top 3. And that is true. Button is not as good as Kimi, Fernando or Michael. That is a fact. I found it interesting in that Watson can criticise Button with his contract problems (which is true they were pretty bad) but Fernando has pulled a sneaky and done his own contract dance to McLaren.

Although Fernando's was without legal problems and you can really own say that it was 'good business'.

I don't mind Button. He is a good driver and he seems like a reasonable guy. This wasnt an attack on him. So dont even go there.

Heck Watson might be made to shut up if Button does well in Bahrain.

The thing that gets me is all this fuss over buttons contract problems, TBH who cares, he is a Formula 1 driver and thats what we should be focusing on, his driving and not his private life or business dealings.

Problem is, its that his contract problems and business dealings do have an impact on who or what he is driving and therfore how he is driving...

its not how he is driving, its what he is driving, two different things.

Well i think he has more chance of doing well in a Honda then a williams...

If you look at it that way then it is what he is driving

I fhe is driving a top car he will win. He dosnt have the brilliance of senna or schumi but again what he drives and how he drives are two completely different things. he could be in the super agur sa05 but dosnt mean how he drives will change does it!

Why do people still talk about the contract situations in 04 and 05? In 1998 people didnt go on about Schumi ramming JV and being disqualified from the 97 season, which is a lot worse than behind-the-scenes contract disputes. As for Button not being a top line driver, I think I've said enough about a hundred times over but there are still plenty of strange blind people who need convincing

He may not be world champion material but all he can do is be as good as he can. I think he will do that in most events. He however has a tendency to accept his faith during a race. he forgets that the greats never did stop pushing no matter what. He will qualify very well. World championship isn't in the stars for Britain

As far as I'm aware, from watching races, Button drives his arse off right to the end of races. No evidence to suggest otherwise. I guess we wont know whether he's wdc material until he's got a wdc-winning car

what point is that then

That he'll never be champion :(

that doesnt make sense - the fact that he drives his a## off every race means he'll never be champion??

well, if he drives his arse off and has never won, thats not a good sign.

its all about the machinery - he drives his arse off but the car isnt up to beating the competition. Just look at his team-mate. Like I keep saying - his team-mates havent won so how can you attack JB for not winning
