Jem of the Shire

Hungary 06

Recommended Posts

Hi guys and girls its raining non-stop today so i thought i'd watch my tape of hungary 06. Whilst i was at it, i thought i'd make a brief step-by-step guide of the major points in the race, and to dispel some of the criticisms that JB only won by luck. Watching the race, i was glad to see that i was right about pretty much everything :naughty:

Even if JB's win doesnt interest you, it may make for 2 mins of interesting reading.

START - Kimi leads from Rubens & De la Rosa

M Schu up to 4th (from 11th) by end of lap 1

Yamamoto crashes (didnt take long!)

JB up to 11th (started 14th) by lap 2

Kubica spins

Webber spins off and retires

JB passes DC for 8th on lap 3

Alonso passes MS for 4th on lap 4

Rain starts to fall on lap 5

De la Rosa passes Rubens

Liuzzi spins

Rubens pits for intermediates despite rain now falling. Exits pits and is all over the place

JB passes Massa

JB passes Fisichella

JB passes M Schumacher

Klien crashes

Massa spins

JB posts fastest lap

Massa pits for wets, lap 13

MS damages front wing racing with Fisichella (MS's own fault)

Kimi pits on lap 17

MS pits on lap 17

JB pits on lap 17

Fisichella crashes

Kubica crashes but continues

Rosberg crashes

Rain stops falling on lap 21

Alonso posts fastest lap and has 30 second lead, lap 23

Alonso laps MS and shakes his fist at MS for no apparent reason

Kimi crashes into Liuzzi, Safety car deployed, lap 24

Alonso pits whilst safety car is out

Safety car comes in lap 30

MS spins

JB badly held up by Massa which gives Alonso 8 second lead

Alonso posts another fastest lap

JB posts fastest lap, lead reduced to 5 secs

JB posts another fastest lap

Scott Speed pits for dries and then crashes

JB cuts lead to 3.5 secs, lap 40

Lead down to 1.5 secs, lap 41

Lead down to 0.8 secs, lap 43

JB all over back of Alonso by lap 44

JB pits and leaves tyres on

Kimi explains to Louise Goodman that Liuzzi is a nice guy and they're good friends

Rubens pits for dries

Alonso pits for dries, lap 51

Alonso hits the wall and retires

JB pits for dries on lap 54

Alonso explains to Louise that it was driveshaft failure

MS collides with Heidfeld on lap 67, and retires

Trulli blows up and crashes

JB wins. At this point, it is clear that James Allen has removed his pants

John Button starts to cry in the honda garage, and tells Louise that this moment is better than sex

On the podium, JB throws Heidfeld's cap on the floor when the british anthem is playing, cos Nick forgot to take it off!! (i hadnt noticed that before)

-------------------------------

A couple of common criticisms I often hear:

"Rubens would've been just as fast but Honda messed up his strategy". - It was stupid pitting for inters when the rain started, but he only suffered briefly. On a drying track when everyone else was also on inters, Rubens was nowhere near on JB's level

"The safety car caused Jenson to get near the front" - safety car gained JB nothing. He was about 2 secs behind pedro when kimi crashed. The safety car actually helped Alonso, who took the opportunity to pit

"The Bridgestones weren't working" - true, but thats just 2 ferrari's, both of which were easily passed by JB. Button still outperformed nearly every michelin runner as well

Come on ykickamoocow i'm sure you'll have something to say :P

Ive already given you a step by spet reasoning why each driver wasnt in a position to win. Half the field was stuffed even before the race began because in car on Bridgetone tyres was going to win. That takes away one of the fastest teams, Fisi made a error which was his fault but Alonso had a wheel nut problem and was forced to retire because of it. The 4 fastest cars on the grid were not in contention for victory which does leave Honda as they were often the 3rd fastest team in field.

Jems, sorry to say this, but you can do that analysis with Olivier Panis wonderful triumph at Monaco ('96 iirc) and, in the end, it wouldn't mean anything except the obvious truth that JB is a competent driver. OP also was a great driver (IMHO) but, in the end, that Monaco win was all he got (you should watch that race...was dramatic and, despite all the DNFs from the great ones, OP did a wonderful display of opportunism and strategic race to win it...just like JB). To be WDC material you need more than that. As of now, JB is in the same league than Olivier Panis. Not a small feat but don't take the champagne out of the fridge yet! :D

Unlike Panis, though, he is still racing so be patient and wait, perhaps he will reveal himself as the golden boy many Commonwealth's ppl seems to think he is. So far, he is just a promise.

Like Liuzzi! :D

Very good anal-ogy, or to put it another way, right now Jenson is just another "one hit wonder"

I used the word "many", not the word "all". Nothing to take back! :mf_tongue:

It wasn'ta fluke, it was a good performance and fortunately things fell in place for him. For people who never took the line that JB is not capable of winning a race, it proved nothing. I still think he is far from WDC material, he isn't much of a racer.

No we never did, Pakistan did for a while though. It is a silly institution which does nothing but play a few games every few years, and the most annoying part is the ruling British monarch is the head of the commonwealth. Being part of the commonwealth matters little as you can see in the recent episode of Indian trainee doctors in Britain.

Delhi is getting spruced up for the Commonwealth games though, so maybe ther is some use in it :P

The only reason Australia is part of the Commonwealth is so we can dominate England's pasty white butts in even more sport. Did you see the medal tally for the last Commonwealth games. Australia smashed everybody.

Im not so sure. The Queen still has the authority to boot our PM out on the street and im all for that as i dont think we can get rid of him any other way :D

If the West Indians can prepare dud pitches where anyone can score 300+ we have a chance.

Ah yes, there is no limit on the number of terms he can do is there. He is on his 4th isn't he?

Australia is in the middle of a Air Force war games with America at the moment in Las Vagas and i must say that its the most 1 sided battle in the history of war games. The Americans are using their most up to date fighter jets while we are using old F1-11's which were used in the Vietnam war and were retired out of the American fleet over 10 years ago. But what the hell, we Australians like a challenge :P

I think so. That is a significant portion of my life and when i think of it that way its really depressing. Another sad thing is that it looked like Howard was going to loose the election by a large margin back in 2001 but then the September 11 attacks occured then he put on the fear campaign and made the population believe that if they didnt vote for him then someone terrorists would kill every living thing in Australia. I still cant believe anyone actually believed his campaign of fear. On another note im still hopeing that in afew years time Peter Garrett will become our Prime Minister as he would be the coolest leader in the world B)

I agree.

I wonder how many wins he will have in 7 or 8 years time, like Panis?

And dont bring out the "he never had a race winning car up until now" card. Panis didnt either.

But Panis had no choice, Button dug himself in there.

It wasn't a fluke, he won because he drove well, and made the right decisions, nothing more too it.

Lol Jem it was a fluke, if it was a dry race he would have never won. For me MS really impressed me that race i know he made some mistakes but still at the end of the race he was driving 2nd with them Sh#tty bridgestones and i still dont know how he managed to get infront of PDLR in that race. Shame that his suspention broke.

And u got alot of things wrong mate.

I am pretty sure MS didnt spun in that race, it was FM that spun afew times. When MS broke his wings hardly his fault if the car hasnt got grip.. and MS did collide with Nick but that wasnt the cause of his DNF

And if JB is really that good driver in wet why didnt he win in China it was also wet? Simple answer MS,FA,GF didnt have such a bad race like in hungary.

Just to point afew things out

JB should have won a race in 04 since he had the second best car on the grid but he didnt instead drivers like kimi, JPM and JT won with worst cars...

I am just pointing thinks out i hope you wont be offended

Ty for reading

dont worry i dont take offence, i welcome your opinion. MS did definately spin once, i watched the race yesterday.

MS collided with Heidfeld and his front wheel was damaged, could hardly turn it. He pulled in that lap, and retired from the race. And whilst he drove very well that day, he did also cut a chicane to stay in front of De la Rosa, and then stayed in front so probably would've got a penalty anyway.

2004, in the 3 races that ferrari didnt win, JB had retired from 2 of them, and in the monaco race he was right behind trulli, there was no way he could've overtaken him. He finished 3rd in the wdc with 85 points and 10 podiums, won international racing driver of the year, you cant really take anything away from him there.

If the race was dry, you're right, he probably wouldnt have won - but how does that mean that his win was a fluke??? He fought his way up through superior wet-weather driving skill, he was faster than everyone else, so i dont see what u mean. Running in 8th and then everyone in front dropping out, that would be a fluke (like Johnny Herbert Nurburgring 1999). Jenson fought through to 2nd with no benefit from retirements.

To be honest i cant remember the china race very well

Why did Honda mess up Rubens strategy? Rubens was the one who went for the wrong tyres, not Honda.
