Ps3

Ok, so after your post about DX10 Shane, I went and asked a mate of mine, who has 5 Xbox 360s (another on the way) 2 of which are debug machines, about what version of DX they used.

Now it's important to note he spends his free time looking through these machines and opening them up to find what exactly is inside. So he quickly responded DX9, and then sent me this little quote ontop of it....

"DirectX 9.0 for Xbox 360

The Xbox 360TM features an implementation of Microsoft

The hardware is still capable of it. And ever heard of software updates? lol

I was hoping you'd say something like this, because it proves your original point to be wrong.

PS3 won't be stuck on DX9 even if it as running it, because it can update its software as well ;) (and its not running any form of DX9, according to the crackers of consoles.... and I'd like to think they know a thing or 2)

Yes but the hardware is only capable of shader model 3? lol

If these folks consider themselves hackers, its about time they got a new job.

And it seems you really do not get my point I never claimed it was running Direct X, I was saying it uses Direct X rendering. The runtime IS NOT.. I repeat because you seem incapable of reading this, the runtime IS NOT the whole of DX 9. Any computer can interpret it with its own runtimes, but the graphics chip is still Direct X powered.

I don't know who these idiots are that you get your info from, but they clearly haven't got a clue about how programming API's work.

THE RUNTIME IS NOT THE ONLY PART OF DIRECT X, IT JUST INTERPRETS CODE. IT ALSO NEEDS SUPPORT AT A HARDWARE LEVEL. How many times do I need to say this before you understand it. YOU DO NOT NEED THE DIRECT X RUNTIMES TO HAVE A DIRECT X POWERED DEVICE.

I'm not the one interrupting it wrong. The chips support features of DX, does not mean you have to use DX... Thats pretty obvious, not to mention the fact you showed stats for a card its BASED on... obviously its modified.

The run times are everything, if you don't have them your not using it. You can work with hardware yourself, you don't have to use any libraries at all, or you can use engines specially made, or you can use things like DirectX and open GL..... not everything has to use whats on the card....

Let me ask you a question also.... How often do you code, and what are some projects you've made? How often do you work with graphics in code?

Edit: Here we go, talked to yet another guy, who works for a developer, and here is a convo....

[14:21] <Priddo> Hey Kata, your a coder for a major developer right?

[14:22] <kata|work> i am

[14:22] <Priddo> Have you done much, or know much about PS3 yet?

[14:22] <kata|work> so far i've been spared most of it, but i have a devkit and will work with it pretty soon.

[14:22] <Priddo> Some guy keeps telling me it uses DirectX 9....... I'm extremely confident it isn't (he also told me 360 runs DX10, when it uses DX9.0c)

[14:23] <kata|work> ps3 does not use dx

[14:23] <Priddo> Thought so ^_^

[14:23] <kata|work> and yes, 360 runs a custom dx9

For Shane & Sato

Xbox 360 can't run DirectX 10, confirms ATI

Posted Aug 24th 2006 11:55AM by James Ransom-Wiley

Filed under: PC, Microsoft Xbox, Business

1up reports that ATI has debunked a rumor that Xbox 360 could be upgraded to support DirectX 10 via a patch. "Xbox360 cannot run DX10," an ATI spokesperson told 1up. Currently, Microsoft's console runs an advanced version of DirectX 9, which, according to ATI, features "memory export that can enable DX10-class functionality such as stream-out."

It's difficult to say when and if studios that are developing cross-platform titles for Xbox 360 and Vista will hit a roadblock because of DirectX variances between the two platforms, but certainly a game like Crytek's Crysis, which does support DX9 with some DX10 features, could be optimized and ported to consoles.

I never said it could run DX10 i said it can use some of the API's.

No, I know that the PS3 uses DX9 it is a modified version of an nVidia GeForce 7800 series graphics chip (known as an nVidia RSX graphics processor), and if you ask anyone who actually KNOWS anything about computer hardware they will tell you the same thing. Now if you don't believe me read these:

The PS3 uses an API based on OpenGL not DirectX. The 7800 series also supports OpenGL, so that doesn't prove anything.

Both the PS3 and the XBox360 are of course well behind a mid range AU$1000 PC, so I see absolutely no reaso nfor buying one. People still do

No, It uses an OpenGL based renderer. Please, don't pretend to know what ou don't, you just end up looking like an idiot. You claim to run a 'techie' forum, I can only imagine what that is like. Or do you stick to thing you do know about there, and think that just because this is an F1 forum, you can get away with utter bulls##t?

Do you want a translation, I can if anyone is interested.

Im OK. I get abit of what people are saying. Im not really a techniqual person. In my computer programming class i got 17% in my last test before i quit due to general incompetents at the subject :D

Several reasons, Cav.

Unless you're buying the very latest console, then they are hell of a lot cheaper than you can buy a PC for that could run the games at any reasonable frame rates. Also, there are quite a few types of game that they excel at, for example Tekken, which has no equal on the PC that I have found - whether you want to play those games is a different matter, though.

What can be frustrating about games on PCs is that the programmers are either very lazy or that they just deliberately make the game to run on future hardware. Personally, I just think it's lazy programming.

Consoles aren't for everyone, just like PC's aren't for everyone.

Its really just a personal thing, noone is right or wrong.

And being a coder myself, I'll tell you its a bit of laziness Pabloh

Exactly, consoles are fine for a defined purpose.

Thanks for that, Sato, I shall curse you instead next time, instead of just programmers in general!!

Another reason is that many games are released as exclusives on consoles. If at all a pc version is released,it's released well after console version sales have petered down.

PS3 does not use directX, because PS3 does not run with Windows

X360 does not use directX, because X360 does not run with Windows

With Linux you can transform your $500 PS3 into a super powerful server, PS3 its not just a console. With Linux you can have emulators ;) you could even run windows with VMWARE. Imagine the boot screen: A - Linux PC B - Games Console

BTW the best gaming machine is the PC. Problem is most games are lame console level ports.

No, you are the one that posts like an arrogant so and so not me :) I just go on what I learn from other places. I don't own a console and have no plans to they are a ripoff.

All the people i get my info from are techies. I tend to trust them over the "look at my massive e-penis i am a l33t box h4x0r" types that you apparently talk to.

And cavallino, Its not like you need an excuse to get involved in arguments lol.
