AleHop 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2012 Sorry, it won't be a good thing for our heated debates during and soon after the race. They said there won't be as many breaks during the race on the new channel in Spain. If I get to know how to broadcast it privately for a few well known forum members I'll let you know. Does anybody knows how to do it 100% privately?

Pants. That's what it is. Big, smelly pants Usually aren't links until race weekend, and you're going to want a whole list because you'll get bounced around a lot. I just ask, as I had been asked by my predecessors and unless the other three wish to discontinue this rule, that specific links to an actual stream stay on PM. General references (i.e. "check Justin, someone might stream it there") are okay. Any violations will be met by the extreme penalty of having the link edited out of your post. Hell, I'll even send any edited out links in a PM to whoever it was aimed at so the offender doesn't have to, because I do empathize (didn't have a TV when I lived in a dorm; ice hockey games are rarely shown nationally, too). I just don't sympathize with complaints about it. HALF THE RACES ARE GOING TO BE ON SKY!!!! Senna's Ghost 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2012 It'll just be like the old days with the BBC back in the 1980's when, if we were lucky we might see the opening laps of a Grand Prix on Sunday Grandstand. Then Des Lynam or Steve Rider would take us to a cricket match for an hour and a half that nobody was interested in because there would only be about 25 spectators watching. Or even worse than the cricket we would be subjected to bloddy snooker. It would then swich back to the race so we could watch the last few laps and enjoy Murray Walker telling us that we've missed a brilliant GP. Oh the joys of the BBC sports schedulers back then. We were at their mercy and the sadistic b#####ds knew it. We then had to wait until 9-10 o'clock in the evening to see 30mins of highlights (this included intro, a features piece, the race and post race comments). I would rather it return to this than give Murdoch any of my money.
Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2012 I know!! The bubbles go up your nose and everything! I would rather it return to this than give Murdoch any of my money. I hear you, but what the hell. No matter what you do, you're going to be giving money to some b@stard or d!ckhead corporation. Unless you move to a farm and grow turnips. But if you do that, send me some. I quite like a good baked turnip with butter and garlic sauce.
freaky2 1 Report post Posted March 2, 2012 Turnip - Good. SKY - Not so good. I actually wanted to start a topic on this, but we can rant about SKY anywhere. I was on the bus today when I saw the ad for the F1 season, which went something like "F1 HD on SKY. A channel only dedicated to F1". And my issue with it is this: why would anyone need a special channel for a form of motorsport that you can only watch 20-23 weekends a year? How many times can you broadcast a race without everyone getting tired of it? Now that I actually stop to think about it, they could always have old races on, but even that is bound to run out. Moreover, can they really get money out of it? I mean, even you guys are not going to get SKY just for the F1 action, so what is the market segment they're going for? Is it guys who need a special channel for everything because otherwise they are confused? I could still rant a bit about the modern problem of "500 channels and nothing worth watching" but I haven't watched TV for ages, so at least I'm proving the point. I'd like to hear your thoughts

Grabthaw the Hammerslayer 4 Report post Posted March 2, 2012 I can tell I am getting old (shut up Steph!) as when this BBC thing was announced in my scarlet rage, I wrote a series of letters. I did. I wrote to the BBC standards committee, I wrote to the teams, I wrote to my MP who forwarded it to the Chief Exec of the BBC. I even wrote to Jackie Stewart to ask his advice. He replied The consistent message coming back - was that it was "the commercial rights holder" to whom this complaint should be addressed. It was also clear that the BBC deal was done behind closed doors (I tried to do a Freedom of Information request to find out details but BBC blocked it as they said it was "artistic" and therefore not subject to FoI....) In other words. BBC ran out of cash, spoke to Bernie who brokered the deal with Sky. i.e. Bernie (not shockingly) was only interested in the money not the sport.... Massa 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2012 Yep, three choices: 1) Sky. 2) Try to find streams or watch the BBC highlights, accepting that you chose not to join Sky. 3) Don't watch half the races. Fact is, this sport isn't run on rainbows. It needs money to operate. You want to change the revenue they go after, then you need to change the entire cost to put on this show. BBC made their own mess, and I find it somewhat silly that we'll criticize someone for not being charitable to government organizations that think things really are run on rainbows. What's greedy? Signing a TV deal at the market value of your sport, or a nation voting to cut spending and then complaining when spending cuts impact their personal enjoyment of something? That's more of a general thing and not-so-much anything really in this thread. Fair and unfair really don't exist. You call the shots you're allowed to call, and don't invite yourself to decide what you're not allowed to decide...it's a lot easier that way. I understand that it's not a great situation, but there are plenty of other situations that aren't that great, either, and you just figure them out.
Rainmaster 7 Report post Posted March 3, 2012 Hey! I defend my right to complain. I never voted for a coalition government or spending cuts. Thanks a lot, democracy! In terms of options, perhaps not too well known is that the Virgin media service, who carry many of Sky's sports channels, will also carry the F1 channel, though not in HD iirc (and are actually a little cheaper than Sky for overall packages). You would still ultimately be giving money to Murdoch, just a little less directly, so that when hell opens up and he tries to consume those souls he owns, you will be slightly harder to find. On the Sky deal itself, and perhaps from my "pro BBC" position (which means I think their content is generally higher quality than other channels...BBC3 excepted): I accept it as a reality that popular sports content will generally go this way. Doesn't mean I have to like it! Who could ever like paying considerably more for the same product (remember we already pay a license fee?)? Some would argue: it isn't the same product. It will be a dedicated F1 channel. That goes back to what freaky said, why do we need a channel dedicated to one sport? Who has time to keep up with everything that will deliver (hours of content a week)? Certainly no person who can afford to pay the money to recieve the channel could ever really enjoy it to the full extent, it seems to me. But Sky has always been one of those business models that offers you lots of things which sound great, but in practice you never actually use. It's like the ultimate gym membership. Anyway, I'm not saying the BBC acted perfectly in their handling of any of this, far from it, and clearly their model didn't work for them. Equally, I'm sure Sky's coverage will be great (you know, competing media organisations being similar to F1 teams, it's all about having the money to hire the right talent, Sky have plenty of money). I just reject the idea that Sky's model is the best for F1 coverage in the UK, it doesn't seem like a good deal or even a smart deal for F1. Let's not forget the teams' position on this also seemed to flip flop very quickly once they realised some of that money was headed their way (iirc). Not that I blame them, or Bernie, or Sky. I blame a society which doesn't value a good thing like the BBC; and a good thing like F1; and a great thing like F1 on the BBC; and other media organisations digging at the Beeb at any opportunity. Ah, you get the idea.. Anyway, tt'll be interesting to see what kind of take up there is for F1 on Sky through the season. Option 2, for me.
AleHop 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2012 How much is it? Do you have to pay extra money for the receiver, decoder, etc? Any other fees or you can pay just for the F1 channel? Some weekends (Canada Spa, Monza, Mónaco, etc.) and depending how interestong the championship is, I would pay 10 € to watch the whole weekend ads free. Is it more than that? I guess it is.
