About 1000 of my about 1800 songs on Spotify (would be more, but no Mike + The Mechanics, no Hootie and the Blowfish, no Frankie Goes to Hollywood...) are Simple Minds (and associated Jim Kerr solo stuff), Depeche Mode (and associated Martin Gore solo stuff), and Tears For Fears (and associated Curt Smith solo stuff, and Roland Orzabal's solo stuff which he mostly released as Tears For Fears after Curt Smith left in my year of birth anyway).  Essentially, I just have everything all three bands ever released...and every version of it, every cut, every remix, every live performance released.  Really been in a Tears phase lately.  I love "The Hurting" as an album, though I also love the collection of rarities and B-sides called "Saturnine Martial & Lunatic."  Just some really bizarre tracks, really cool stuff.

I also listen to some harder stuff/metal more recently, but only if it has a high level of musicianship which you would think is the last thing a guy who listens mostly to new wave would require.  But I'm not a very angry person at all, and just having a lot of noise and yelling isn't for me.  The lighter stuff and the more progressive stuff is the best.  Porcupine Tree is incredible.

And then there's me and my silly "adult alternative" top 40 pop stuff like Matchbox Twenty/Rob Thomas and Dave Matthews.

In short: you shouldn't add me on Spotify because all my playlists are **** and I know it.

Good stuff Eric - love Tears for Fears, The Hurting was a massively under-rated album. My wife got sick of me playing Raoul and the Kings of Spain though :-) She kept going "Raoooooooooooouul"..... :)

Seen the name Kate Bush in this thread a few times so I figured I'd mentioned that I heard "Running Up That Hill" on the radio of all places a few nights back.  First time I'd ever heard any of her songs.  There was something odd about it that I really liked.  May check out more of her music on the YouTube since she isn't available on U.S. Spotify.

Really been into New Order, Duran Duran, Big Country, The Fixx, Mike + The Mechanics, The Smiths, and Pet Shop Boys lately.  Nothing out of the norm for the usual genres I like.  I think I've just about exhausted every band or artist Wikipedia tells me is part of new wave.

Derek Forbes, original bassist of Simple Minds and now with two other original members in a new wave cover band called Fourgoodmen.  He put two videos up years ago, then disappeared.

I still love what Simple Minds released after Forbes left, but his bass was such a huge part of their best album "New Gold Dream."  I wish he'd post more stuff; the bass in "Theme For Great Cities" is covered all over YouTube but I'd love to hear the right one.

If you are of a mind to listen to this in its entirety, then thank you for indulging me. If not, then if nothing else, skip to 4:55 onwards for an attack on the senses. Staring at the face on that pole whilst this plays out from five minutes onward still irks and mildly freaks me out for reasons unexplained. There is something almost medieval going on in my soul - I can't put it into words.

Still, that's music for ya's; sometimes evoking the indescribable.

So, whilst we're in this genre, check out the other Prog' Rock group who never reached the critical or commercial acclaim of Genesis or Yes; the mighty Gentle Giant. A bunch of self confessed show off's.

None of you (apart from Argento or Russ - if he's listening) will care but I feel moved to explain why I love this so much. A bunch of guys talented enough to play this piece is enough to captivate me. But the fact they felt moved to learn it and learn it so well, fascinates me. The passion and devotion to complication is such a refreshing diversion in this age of mediocrity. It's not easy on the ear. But it's wickedly tight and complex. It's also fun and smug superior. I f*cking love it.

Sean, help me out. (I even spelled your name right).

Currently got myself into a brilliant band. The Amboy Dukes. Journey to the Centre of the Mind is just brilliant. Suggest you have a little listen if you haven't already.

Also having a little listen to Emerson Lake & Palmer. Quite good!

a-ha's great.  They're a typical "Massa" band, one where you have to explain "no no no no there's more to it than (that one song they've heard, in this case, "Take On Me," which I actually like, but "Manhattan Skyline," particularly the extended remix, is my personal favorite of their stuff)."

As for British bands, most of the music I have is English/Scottish, so I'd have to agree if we're making generalizations...

...and on those generalizations, since all of my favorites are English/Scottish and haven't really been too big since the 80s, none of them really tour outside of Britain, and that saddens me.  I'll have to swim across one day and be the only one under 40 at any of these shows.

Haven't had much time to discover and add anything new to the lineup recently (though I have been giving attention to some things that were there all along but I hadn't been listening to much, mostly Rush and Dave Matthews), but I did hear "Midnight City" by M83 on HBO's Rangers/Flyers 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic show and since then it's gained a lot of popularity.  I like it, and I don't really like much of anything from this era.  Just a cool song.

I'm interested to know, how did A-HA in your view influenced artist like Chris Martin and co? I've loved A-HA since their first hit "The sun always shines on TV". The amount of quality songs they produced were amazing, much like Coldplay is doing it these last few years... Chris Martin has gone on record saying that A-ha were a major influence on his writing and the overall sound of the band [link]. Coldplay have covered 'Hunting High & Low' and 'The Living Daylights' on tour and have had both Morten and Mags on stage with them from time ti time. Mags unfortunately has heart disease and the band retired for good last year after selling over 80 million records worldwide. They were always labelled as a 'teen' band and my daughter had their posters plastered all over her room when I was playing in a hard rock band! That used to rankle me. Us 'real musos', as we thought of ourselves then, simply wrote them off as a synth pop phenomena that would wither and die. But, has time has showed they were so much more than than that and the quality of the songwriting proves it. I'm currently working on a new solo album with a full string ensemble which is a major departure for me and they have been high on my inspiration list. Here's a snippet for all you cynical b#####ds to pull to bits :)
