General Music Thread

I can't say I listen to any of those three with much regularity (and maybe I should, since Cyndi Lauper filmed a music video in a house that my family owned at the time), but I totally get it when I listen to those live versions. There is so much feeling in that and it's tremendous. Great, great stuff. I absolutely love listening to live music, wish I could go see live music but it just doesn't happen with the bands I enjoy most, so I'm stuck with YouTube, live releases (which get polished of course), and studio demos which also feel raw (I enjoy demos a lot, because a lot of the music I like can feel too synthetic at times).

My picks weren't an endorsement of either song, just my picks. They're special to me, and probably junk to others. So it goes.

These two do it for me, both link to YouTube:

http://tinyurl.com/btl7tep - Simple Minds "Someone Somewhere" from 1982. I have always really loved this song since I first heard it, but live, in their prime, with that lineup (not quite the original but probably the best one they had)...it's something else.

http://tinyurl.com/c69za7 - Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds "Crush." Everyone, and I mean everyone, around here loves Dave Matthews. And I was like "eh yeah whatever when DMB comes on the radio I don't turn it off, but I mean really..." and then someone told me to listen to him live and now it makes sense.

Rad.

Oh, it wasn't a knock at all on your picks or what has meaning to you. It was more of a "holy **** those were so powerful I saw songs/artists that I knew but hadn't paid attention to in a completely different light."

Have you ever done this? [Mod edit: #1 songs on day of birth]

My number #1's are:

'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon in the US

'Long Haired Lover From Liverpool' by Little Jimmy Osmond in the UK

'Ben' by Michael Jackson in Australia

See which songs you get

Hi Spiritinthe sky, welcome to TF1.

I'm sure you mean well, but creating a thread solely to advertize your own website is considered spam. Contributing members are more than welcome to include a link in their signature, and make mention when appropriate. I removed the link, but I encourage your participation in the forums. :)

I keep reading how vinyl is coming back. Anyone a fan?

It never went away, in my house. I clean them with my kipper tie.

Mr. Mister's MTV Spring Break concert from 1986. Listened to the whole thing on YouTube. Here's just one of the seven songs, any of which I would have posted. One of the few brands I really like that isn't British. Chose this one just because the intro is so damn cool. Of course, I'm fairly confident that Richard Page is being backed by vocalists that aren't there, but it's still good stuff in my opinion.

Other stuff, all YouTube:

Simple Minds - "Speed Your Love/C Moon Cry Like a Baby" live in 1984 - I hate that this band had already fallen by the time I was even born, let alone old enough to go to a show, if they were to ever perform in the U.S. which they haven't done since they completely geared their music toward the U.S. market with "Once Upon a Time."

Tears For Fears - "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" extended - 10 minute version of the song I'd never heard before. I have no idea why it wasn't on the deluxe re-release of "Songs from the Big Chair" they did relatively recently.

Okay, last one, that I feel like I've posted before: A-ha - "Never Never" - a demo that eventually became "The Sun Always Shines on TV."

That Cohen song reminded you of the Jeff Buckley cover? Brilliant in it's own way...

Exactly

Too much mushiness and melancholy around these parts.

Let's rock the boat a little:

A little snippet of beautiful music production from the electronic-side. For fans of experimental/EDM style-stuff Talabot's 'ƒin' is a must-buy. One of the most interesting full-lengths of the year so far. Stick with it - and make sure you have a good sound-system/headphones or it's not worth listening.

"General music" question:

Why do many British singers from many different eras sound British when speaking, but American when singing? It blows my mind.
