the only time I've seen a kangaroo up close is at the zoo!! I don't think they come into the suburbs, moreso the rural areas.

 sorry mate. Yeah it is funny how they think that kangaroos ruled the streets and the like. Just realised something, I think this is the longest a thread about Sato has gone without him getting his name dragged through the mud, and all we had to do was talk about kangaroos  Oh, it's past 7pm, it's safe to go outside now

OK comic genius enough of that!! I'm just jealous cos we don't have any interesting wildilfe here in UK. The most exciting animal is probably a badger

Don't forget Australian sports, which Sato & nojovnof1 were talking about. We've discussed f1 too much, about the same few subjects over and over, so we're resorting to other matters now!

That is true, but come on, its a 3 week break, with not that much happening.... Usually we'd have some track action from friday practise to discuss around now.

They come into town??? They're the weirdest mammal ever, with that little pouch and the way they bounce around and fight like girls

Hey, Kangaroos are not mammals, they are marsupial...

Hehe, you Australians could say anything, and because you are so far away we could believe it easily, just as a lot people thinks that in mexico we use the horse and the "charro" outfit everyday...

even in the US think that we still are an Spanish colony and when then think in mexican people think in spanish music and men with "sombreros" (hat).

Haha...

I have no idea what you are talking about Eduardo

In every movie that want to depict a mexican, its common the donkey, the horse, the big mustache, big hats and northern mexican-spanish accent...

Maybe because the most people that goes to US to work are from the north of the country maybe, you think that Tijuana is Mexico.

but, well...

Everything started because the kangaroos are marsupials, not mammals...

yeah!, try to find them in the cities!

the only places where you can find those things are the places that US travelers go...they like them to take pictures and stuff... :P

I think this is true everywhere. I have travelled extensively through Asia and if you want to be sure to find stereotype culture, go where the tourists will be. You will find plenty being sold on the streets, eg, picutres with Geishas in Japan, monks in Tibet, etc.

definitely. i was in hong kong on a sampan tourist boat ride through aberdeen fishing village. on one side of the water there were derelict fishing boats with families of 15 living on these tiny s##tty house boats, and on the other massive multi-million dollar luxury cruisers.

all the fat middle-aged mothers on our boat with their kids would be taking flash photos of the povvo houseboat families and commenting on how "authentic" the fishing village was. that fishing village was the biggest stereoptype ever and the tourist mummies were lapping it up.

I've spent a lot of time in Hong Kong recently and I don't remember seeing any shanty-fishing villages there... I imaging this was not near Victoria harbour which to me appeared very affluent indeed - even on the Kowloon side. Much like the area around the parliment buildings in London, in fact. When were you there?

i was there in feb. it's on the other side of victoria's peak. it's called 'aberdeen', and there is a fishing village there. the area is famous for the 'jumbo floating restaurant'. well it's famous to tourists anyway, which is probably why you haven't seen it! it's really bizarre as it's a stereotype of the poor asian fishing village, but it also beneifits immensely from the tourist trade, and the million dollar boats moored there adds to the surreal feel.

if you can, take a look at the area it's really eye-opening. there are also massive public housing blocks where all the poor people live, families of 5 in 3x5 m rooms apparently. well that's what the tour guide said! kowloon side is all hustle, bustle and affluence, but aberdeen and that area is where all the poor workers that drive the street markets live.

Sounds great! Hong Kong is such a massive and diverse city I am not at all surprised to have learnt that something major as this escaped me. Did you take the tram up the mountain to the observatory? It's a fabulous view up there down over the city and indeed to the adjacent peak where that enormous castle of a mansion is (Lee Ka-Shings?). Fabulous stuff!
