Fry: 'Renault are catchable'

Jenson Button's BAR team have World Championship leaders Renault in their sights, claims team boss Nick Fry.

BAR have under-achieved this season since claiming second place in the Constructors' Championship last year and have yet to score a podium finish.

But Fry remains optimistic that Renault are within range, even though the Anglo-French team have scored six wins and 93 points more than BAR-Honda over the first 11 races.

He insists there are no limits to how successful BAR can be in the remaining eight races of 2005 and has vowed to fight to the bitter end to claim a maiden win this year.

"They are catchable," said Fry, who saw Button finish fifth in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday as Juan Pablo Montoya won for McLaren ahead of Renault's Fernando Alonso.

"Certainly Renault are in our focus now, we have pulled up a little bit now. We will worry about Renault first and then we will worry about McLaren later."

"To catch McLaren is going to be tough but the good thing about our team is that Honda and ourselves are completely determined to win."

"We do have the ability and the resources to keep developing the car until the last lap of the last race and develop next year's car with next year's engine at the same time."

"That is what we are going to do and we are not going to be giving up."

Fry has put his faith in BAR's testing regime to deliver the improvements necessary to lift them up the constructors' standings.

BAR have, within the 30-day voluntary limit, tested more than any of their rivals - with the exception of Ferrari - and Fry believes Button and team-mate Takuma Sato will reap the rewards soon.

"One thing that is working in our favour is we are by far and away the most efficient team in testing," he said.

"We do significantly more kilometres so we get more tests done than anyone else."

"So we can catch up. We have got three days in Spain this week when no doubt we will have lots more performance parts and we will continue to battle away. We are going to be totally relentless."

"I think the thing everyone needs to realise is the difference between any of these cars is very, very small. The cars are all very quick and the changes you have to make are fairly tiny between the best car and ours."

"The problem is everyone is developing their cars at such a fast pace. We are developing our car fairly quickly and we think slightly faster than some of the others. Every time we find a couple of 10ths of a second they probably find one. The gap closes slowly."

Such is Fry's optimism for the future, he is still predicting a maiden victory this season.

Recent improvements have lifted BAR up the grid and they can lay claim to being the third fastest car at the moment, giving Fry hope that with luck Button can finally end his win drought.

"A win is clearly our objective," he added. "We are in that top bracket and if you are in that top bracket you are in with a fighting chance."

"We just have to continue to plug away and one day your reliability is better than the others and you have got the pace. We are just going to go for it until the last race."

I am beginning to hate BAR-Honda, every staff seems to be capable of saying things they can't acheive, things they haven't proved.

If you're that good, why don't you prove it...

I agree with the title, but then again both mclaen and renault are catchable, its just a case of actually doing the job to catch them! It has to be said though, BAR are improving in strides against the beginning of the season!

:D:D:D

It is one thing after the other. Either the driver thinks he is F1 GOD, or the boss under whose leadership they were caught cheating comes up with this nonsense.

The only team that can do it will be Ferrari, for they have the talent and the capabilites.

Wow, you all REALLY hate BAR dont you! `You have to agree there is some truth in what fry has said, that if they worked their butts off they would probably be able to close the gap! I dont think its impossible. and what you said monty, thats utter nonsence seeing ferrari havnt a clue with why they are going 'backwards' so i wouldnt bet n ferrari being much better for a few races yet, especially with the summer testing ban coming into play next week. So what teams do in their tests this week will determine how rthey perform from now till turkey!

Set the points to zero for both Ferrari and BAR. Starting from next race, you will find Ferrari scoring more points than BAR by the end of the season :D

I have a very low opinion of 'Nick the Prick' 'cause he has been talking crap the whole season. I just don't listen to what he has to say anymore!

oh dear nick fry. this guy is really getting on my nerves. when button says it it can be dismissed somewhat as driver hubris or arrogance, but fry should be more realistic.

Fry must think before he says this rubbish, BAR has no chance of catching Renault and McLaren, unless they fail to finsih every race from here to the end of the season, but thats about it

why do you say this. BAR are not that bad and as i have said, if they do the work they will eventually catch up! Its just a case of them actually doing the job correctly

Substitute MS - JB with Ferrari - BAR. It still won't happen. Don't take it personally JR, this is reality. :)

this is the team that hoped to be within 75% of the team leader this year, be challenging for victories this year, winning a grand prix in their first year. wonder how long they will last.

Well im not a pessimist like you lot so!

One thing is to be optimist and other a dreamer..., with the feet on the ground, do you really think BAR could catch Renault or Mclaren?...

Ohh and I want to give my admiration to you, you are a real fan, people like you are welcome in every sport, you carry the colors of your team in your blood.

I do really believe that they can catch them maybe not fully but enough to challenge properly for podiums and maybe even a win. Its whether they do or not as they have the men including drivers and engineers and the money and the facilities, tbh theres no reason why they cant step up a gear and put down a final challenge.

thank you for your admiration also, i may not agree with many here, but fans like taku and sato, you and a few others really do feel passionate about whom they support and yes it is very good there are people like that!

Ohh at last I understand you!

You mean that BAR can catch the other teams fighting for podiums and wins!, all the time I thought you were saying that BAR will REACH them in points!...ups, sorry man, language problems I imagine...

I HOPE BAR could fight por podiums, less podiums for Mclaren, better for Renault! :D

:D Yes so long as renault and FA win this year id be happy, so yeah to have more competative teams fighting for podiums will minimise mclarens chances, i realsied the other day i disliked KR and JPM, shame really as KR is a brilliant driver but i just dislike him! Ahh well, i shall join you by saying GO RENAULT for WDC and WCC while also saying GO JB for wins and podiums (if at all possible if BAR pull their hands outa theri a##'s)
