Luck In Formula 1

Recommended Posts

There has been a lot of talk this season,(infact most seasons) about certain drivers being lucky.

Obviously to be successful in any sport you do need a certain amount of luck to go your way, but...

Ever notice how the better driver in a team has more "luck"... less engine blow up(possibly from not pushing the engine to hard), less punctures(not going off track) ect...

At Ferrari: Shumacher vs. Barrichello (Shumacher has a lot more "luck")

At BAR: Button vs. Sato (Same)

At Renault: Alonso vs. Fisi (Same)

The Monza GP for example... The Mclarens have been by far the quickest car this season but blow engines all the time(Probably pushing their Illmor/Merc engines too hard). As for the punctures, they were apparently caused by Mclaren placing too much stress on the tires for qualifying & a long distance of the race with a heavy fuel load... No Luck there! Kimi spinning under pressure... no luck there.

Makes you wonder!

The talk of Alonso being a lucky champion should he win the title this season is rubbish! Think about the fact that he has scored on average nearly 2 points per race more than Kimi through out the season!

Also think about this, earlier this season(I think it was the French GP), in the final stages of the race the positions were static with big gaps between the leaders, Alonso had turned down the revs on his engine saving it whereas Kimi was setting the quickest laps of the race including the fastest lap on the last lap of the race!

Strangely enough his engine let go in practice for the very next race.

Apparently Alonso & Kimi were both deciding their own "luck" for the next GP!

I'm sorry my friend but 2005 will always be remembered as the year that Kimi Raikkonen should have won the title. He's driven the fastest and most consistently, dont get me wrong FA has driven extremely well too, but has been gifted at least 3 wins. Not only has Kimi had breakdowns in races, he's now had to start 10 slots down on the grid 3 times!! I hate Kimi he's a miserable little git but I think it is he who deserves to be the 2005 champion. He's impressed me (which takes a lot), and Alonso has just been normal, just picking up lucky points and wins. He did impress me a little in san marino though

Raikkonen has been very unlucky this year, as he has been in the past on several occasions. He has the fastest car in 2005 and is more than a match for JPM, yet McLaren Mercedes are handing the title to Renault by continually making errors

montoya should also have won a couple more races this year, but hasnt due to his injury and mechanical problems. This year really should have been like 1998 for mclaren - best drivers, best car. oh well maybe next year!

I don't believe in making your own luck really... I mean sometimes it makes some sence, but then you have people saying MS makes his own luck, when he drives of road and manages to not damage the car to much....Which is just stupid.

You can say KR deserves winning this WDC but saying FA has been just normal is... UTTER RUBBISH!!!!!!!!

not really. you have very conveniently ignored the example of Kimi Raikkonen.

However I am not convinced the mclaren's would be this fast if they were as reliable as Alonso's Renault. I dont see how technical problems can be put down to a better driver. if Fisichella brakes and Alonso brakes, and Fisichella's brakes do not work (like in monza) how does that prove alonso is the better driver?

Most of Mclaren problems are down to luck that could be removed by enforcing actions to prevent them. They are not and gambling instead and paying the price for it.

You are nit picking, Im not saying every time a drivers car brakes its his fault!

Im saying that several of Kimi's problems have initially been caused by him:

-Running off the track & thus stuffing up his wheel balancing & causing puncture in Germany (his fault)

-Pushing his car to hard in France, and setting pointless fastest laps at the end of the race & his engine blowing up at the very next race meeting (His Fault)

-As I said initially Carrying too much fuel in Qualifying & first stint of the race & therefore damaging his tyres (He choose his strategy, His Fault)

-Spinning at Monza, and having to push hard to make up time at the end whereas Alonso & Monty had been saving their cars... And probably meaning his engine with blow up at Spa (His Fault)

I REST MY CASE!

FA deserves this just as much as kimi. He has been constantly challenging for wins and podiums, been driving superbly well! How dare any of you say he is an undeserving champion!

actually I find that quite interesting, I have not looked at any of kimi's engine failure in the perspective of him pushing too ahrd in the previous race.

that said you cant blame him for monza, it was all or nothing for him.

btw I meant brake literally, not as a misspelling of break.

This is the point... I can understand it was all or nothing in Monza but McLaren and KR have faced the last 8 or 9 races as if it was all or nothing (maximun attack!!!!!!) I think that some factors must be taking into account, not only Raikonen

I guess some could say that Kimi has pushed his luck too much in some races this year and that is a reason why he has retired from those races. FA this season has raced with a cool head, not pushing the car beyond it's limits and it shows because he has the points lead! You make luck by not using it!

Thats utter rubbish Alonso and Raikonnen have made mistakes but all you can say is that Raikonnen is the best driver on the grid but Alonso will win the championship end off.

Raikonnen set a lap quicker than Montoya by 2 tenths with twice as much fuel as Montoya thats impressive in my opinion.

Alonso crashing out in Canada in a position to win the race that wasnt impressive my opinion and that was definatly his fault.

And if you remember Alonso span out in Monza last year infact!

The second section is funny, twice as much fuel? He probably had 3-4 laps worth more fuel in tank than Montoya. I am sure he lowered fuel drain when stuck behind Villeneuve to last more than originally planned.

"I'm sorry my friend but 2005 will always be remembered as the year that Kimi Raikkonen should have won the title."

could have, would have, should have, Will Not. I don't see why alot of you are criticising Alonso, it reeks of sour grapes to me. Look, at the start of the year (first 3 races to be specific) the Renault was the best package. Of those 3 races, Alonso won twice and finished third - unlucky to not win in Aust due to rain in quali. Since then the McLaren has been the better package, however McLaren AND Kimi have made far too many mistakes during the year, and Alonso has been able to put himself in a position to capitalise on those mistakes.

The fact he has been in a position to capitalise on such mistakes so many mistakes shows just how fast and consistent the guy is. He's only made one silly driving error (in Canada). Look, neither driver is my favourite, but I'm indifferent either way. I would enjoy either a Kimi or a Fernando championship win, I'm not bothered either way. I believe Fernando will be a worthy and much deserving champion, no driver who wins the title is undeserving or unworthy of such an honour. Besides, it doesn't mean Alonso is the best in F1. All it means is that during this given year, he did the best job.

good comments nojvnof1 but if Hakkinen had retired from the 1999 japanese gp, and eddie irvine had become the world champion, do you think he would have deserved it? (obviously I would have loved it)
