Narain to seal 2006 deal

After missing out on the Midland-Jordan seat, Narain Karthikeyan may secure a 'Friday' or 'third' driver job with another grand prix team. An associate close to the first Indian on the grid told 'Business Standard' that a 2006 deal could be announced as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday.

The news comes amid reports that Karthikeyan, 28, will remain under contract to at least seven sponsors next year, meaning that they would expect his presence in pitlane.

Narain's 'associate' said the former Jordan driver is spending the week in England during talks about the test seat. Williams, who earlier approached Karthikeyan's 2005 teammate Tiago Monteiro, is on the lookout for a paying driver to fill its 'Friday' spot

You're proud of this!?!

Williams is looking for money not talent and even with this solitary objective they still consider Narain (and his record sums of sponsorship money) a second choice. That is pathetic!

I'll reserve judgment till it's official and if it's made official Sir Frank will further known as Sir Frank of Dunce and should be banned from the paddock.

Well, I'm not so sure. Obviously Narain will add zero value as a third driver but how much would another driver add? Would this value be more than the sum Narain's sponsors are willing to put up, it must be a big number, perhaps as much as $10m?

The 3rd driver helped McLaren greatly this year, I don't care how much money he brings if there is no credable return for the the time investment.

Good point, Narain will absolutely detract from the team's reputation in the same way he has done for Formula 1 in general this past season.

I have, countless times, but once more just for you:

By allowing a substandard driver into the sport, Formula 1 suffered a slight loss of credibility. Imagine if all the drivers were substandard, the entire series would then be considered substandard.

on what basis do u gudge whether a driver is substandard .obviously if a driver is known as best in f1 in a year then there will also be a 16th best!that doesnt mean the bottom half of the field should be thrown out

They just want a machine on the track that gives them the numbers to analise, Narain will just be the monkey behind the wheel... so the money looks very good to Williams which can be used to upgrade the car.

A combination of things really. In Narain's case, a record-setting sum of money was paid to subsidize his lack of talent as evidenced by his pathetic resume. Now, this could have been overcome with quality performances on track but these never came. Instead, I saw reckless, out of control driving and a complete failure to deliver when it mattered most (unlike his team mate). There is no doubt on this forum or anywehre else, save perhaps India, that Narain is a substandard, talent-deficient token participant.

Yes but clearly Monteiro was their first choice monkey for the job.

Yep, he was, he is still a monkey but at least he is a humble and safe monkey :)

Bajo, we are forgeting that Williams can have 2 test drivers just like Mclaren did...

Indeed, he has an excellent attitutde on (in respect of other drivers) and off (in respect of his team) the track. He is also amongst the safest drivers, if not the safest driver outright, in Formula 1 and is a model for the other young drivers in this regard. He did get off to a slow start and I criticized him heavily for this but he picked up the pace in a steady fashion and capitalized on the opportunities that presented themselves. Overall, I was impressed with Monteiro's first season in F1 and do not object to him remaining.

I am not a great fan of NASCAR, but lets not fool ourselves. Taking a page out of the Nascar handbook F1 is turning into nothing more then a marketing tool. The driver in question in this thread, Sato and please don't take this the wrong way, Button, all have marketing potential over ability. Now Button is a very good driver, but as good as he is I think his marketing potential is overshadowing even his driving potential.

Please , please don't take this as a bash of Button. I am just stating that his marketing potential is huge.

It must be if it outweighs his talent
