If it werent for all the retirements RB would have ended up 7th or 8th, hardly the drive of his life

He was also dreadfully slow and the only reason he finished ahead of JB is bcause he started ahead of JB which admittedly was JB's fault!

I'm sure JB had his reasons. We all know what JB is capable of, and something must have been seriously wrong for him to be strolling around the track in 15th. Lets see what happens in the next few races before we make any judgements! Even schumacher had days when he was outperformed by barrichello

Yea he did do crap, I won't deny that, its his worst race that I can remember!! But people are saying he's rubbish and barrichello is suddenly a much better driver bla bla, without good reason

Well people will always jump the gun. I've seen on other sites people saying Rubens would beat Button after qualifying in the race when he first outqualified Button and the second time. Of course, eventually they'll be right, because team mates hardly ever have a perfect score over their team mates, but let them have their five minutes and accept it. After all we'll have hours more of gloating.

I guess he is just HUMAN :clap3: at least M.W. admitted that he went into that corner a bit "HOT" and gave away the position but you have to admit not too many drivers other then Kimi would have made him suffer for the mistake.

unlike that clap trap cheat M.S.

Couldn't resist adding one last comment thats got NOTHING to do with this thread huh? <_<

and Schumi makes people pay for mistakes like that far more than the overrated finn mika-clone ever will...

Isn't Monaco known partly because its the track where car advantage is made a bit smaller and a good driver can really hussle a car past where it should be?

Surely Mark did that last weekend.

Indeed, the only part I disagree with in your post was the unnecessary last line.

Webber has had some impressive drives. I think McLaren would do well to sign him to replace Kimi if they can.

The same Kimi who overtook him on track at Monaco?

If you havent noticed Webber had an amazing race at Monaco and it is just like you to find the one fault in his race. Webber was keeping up and sometimes driving faster than both a McLaren and Renault which are bother faster cars.

It doesn't mean that

a) He deserved driver of the race (probably deserved it more than DC though)

B) he is a Kimi replacement

c) he is any better than the rest in the middle pack right now

d) the rest of his race made his amateurish mistake excusable

e) That he was driving better than Kimi or Alonso

Webber is suddenly the next big thing again since the other midfield drivers are not having a great time. It is suddenly the in thing to support him, everyone's doing it.

Just support him one race. I promise you'll like it. :naughty:

Making such a fuss over a small issue. Mark made a mistake, Kimi passed him, big freakin deal. Fact of the matter is that the Williams is nowhere near as good as the Renault or McLaren and Mark was racing with them, genuinely, not on low fuel, for a race win, with or without that mistake.

Webber outbraked himself, you make it sound so dramatic, as if he smashed into the wall, passed whilst under Safety Car or parked his car on track... ;)
e) That he was driving better than Kimi or Alonso

Kimi and Alonso were doing what was expected of them. Noone expected Mark to be fighting with them for a win, except for maybe some Williams team members and perhaps Mark himself.

Well I supported him before Monaco, mainly for his attitude, liked his driving style but never thought he was WDC material, still don't fully think that, but my belief in his talent has gone up...

This is why he is my driver of the day...

(my post elsewhere)

My driver of the day went to Webber despite him not finishing. Why?

When he qualified on Saturday I never read a single post saying Webber was the heaviest of the top qualifiers, but he was. For the first laps I heard people expecting Webber to be the first to pit and so was in no chance of a win and probably not a podium.

Sure he made a mistake, however so did Kimi and Juan that I know of, just their mistakes didn't cost them a place, doesn't take anything away from the fact they made a mistake though. As Mark said himself, it was like an hour of qualifying, now I've always rated him highly over a lap, but not over a long distance.

After the pitstops it was pretty clear it was a three horse race for the win, before them many believed it was a simple case of Kimi vs Alonso.

I normally base my driver of the day based on the driver who performed better than expectations. I've followed Mark closely over the last few seasons and I've never seen him so motivated and so good on the track.

Schumacher did great yes, he's a seven times world champion, Alonso did good yes, he'd a world champion too, Kimi did well yes, he's a multiple race winner and several times title challenger. Webber is a one time podium visitor with nothing better to his name.

My belief in his on track capabilities has definitely gone up, I hope he continues to show this motivation and consistancy on track.

Someone ovetook 8 cars on track without crashing into anyone and was the fastest driver on the track, and outclassed his teammate while starting the race from the same position.

I take it literally.

Besides saying Williams were in a winning position is missing the point - being fast and unreliable is far worse. So Mark Webber was on a glory run in a car running beyond its limits, until it gave up. He was not in a position to win at any time - the failure was inevitable, since it happened to both their cars, its like the very fast Mercedes engines last year that kept blowing up - speed is completely useless if you cannot finish a race - DC finished where Webber would have been in a car about 2 seconds a lap slower.

Schumacher's race was flawless, one of the best I have seen him drive in the past 10 years. People keep pointing out the fact that he seems to make what look like very mateur errors, but he usually does that when the car is not good enough and he is pushing like hell. He doesn't try to look pretty - he'll give it his all even if he crashes in the process, and he can live with the criticism, that is why he lived through the Monaco storm, through all the detractors who started to ask if he was still good enoough, before Imola, all that does not affect him one bit. I admire that resilience.

Why does a car failure impact on not choosing Webber? Webber doesn't make the car you know. It wasn't racing beyond it's limits, as it was not the engine that blew up, they had a problem they never had before which would have happened whether Webber was 1st on pace or 10th on pace. (It was the exhaust) Since when was Webber going to finish third then? First I can't say he would win because he wouldn't finish, then you say DC did the same as him. Make your mind up. Nico was a full 1.5 behind Webber's fastest lap, showing it was nothing to do with driving a car beyond its own limits trying to get some glory.

I didn't say Webber broke his car - the identical failures most certainly indicate that he did not.

What I mean is

I normally base my driver of the day based on the driver who performed better than expectations.

Well he didn't in the end did he, he DNF'd. It's all very hypothetical to say he could have won - he was one position below where he should have been when he retired, that is the only fact.

You can say he could have been driver of the day, but you can't say he was. Otherwise I can contend that Klien has as much right to be driver of the day as Webber (and certainly Coulthard), since all other things being equal, they were both in a potential third place when they retired.

No, Webber was always in third or higher position, Klien benefitted from retirements, Webber did not. He got there through sheer determination and good laps.

I can say he was, Webber WAS the driver of the day IMO and no one can say otherwise as it is my opinion and I've backed it up with why.

No one, I repeat no one expected Williams to be fighting for a win or second place on outright pace.

Oh and performance and results are two different things.

But Williams retired, both of them. So ultimately its a glory run rather than anything worthwhile. It's not the first time they have performed well only to retire this season. Maybe they should have done more reliability runs in testing, I don't know.

Webber benefited from Schumacher going to the back too, otherwise he would in all probability have been another place down.

Performance and result - I agree - but let me put it this way - if Webber had finished third I would have still said Michael was the driver of the day. Even if he finished second I'd still give it to Michael narrowly. If he won it would be a tie, and then you could consider a tie breaking factor like Michael screwed up on Saturday and give it to Webber.

That is my opnion, you are welcome to have yours :)

How did he benefit by Schumacher going back? The sectors proved Webber was going to end up at least one more place on the grid with the time he was on as he had got the last of his fresh rubber, but had to slow down as Michael "parked" it. Consider both sides of what happened. ;)

Webber had more fuel and so I suspect he would have at least be second. First is too tough to call and no one truly knows because they retired too soon to tell. However, it is fair to say the top three all had a chance at it.

I wouldn't give it to MS because he's a 7 times champion and so I expect him to drive well especially when he was motivated (what is more motivating than when you have something big to prove), but Webber. I never thought I'd ever see him drive like he did on Sunday even as probably one of his biggest and first fans here, I rated his attitude above his driving skills.

Of course we can both have a different opinion, it all depends on what you value more in a drive.

Was Webber up on Michael in the first 2 sectors  - if he was, you're right.

I personally prefer not to count novelty as a factor.

ive always quite liked Mark Webber and wished he could replicate the skill he shows in quali in the race. therefore i was really chuffed for him (and his fans) last sunday & i was cheering him really loudly to catch & get by KR & FA - was gutted for him when he stopped - would loved to have seen him on the podium :king:

but obviously MS was my driver of the day - i think he did a stonking job & im really glad he did - and yep i think i am being decidedly baised this time :P
