I believe that in the UK a margin of 10% +2mph is used by the police. So in a 60mph limit you'll probably get away with up to 68mph . I've never tried it.

Here the motorway limit is 110kph - absolute agony to drive at in anything but a van or some anaemic car. Speed is good, speed keeps you alert. It is very hard to remain alert when you are trundling along at 110 with nothing in sight.

But did get caught at 104mph in a 40mph limit some years ago. Didn't get away with that one.

I have to say, MG, that you were going that fast it would be difficult to tell in the dark, even if you are consciously looking out for them.

He was following me at a safe distance but then he ran a red light (I was only doing 40 in a 30 at that point) and I thought to myself "uh oh, it's the local turbo nutter b#####ds in their XR3". So I decided the best course of action was to leave him behind, but the faster I went the more determined he seemed to stay with me. Not the best decision I've ever made, but I did find out that a Cavalier SRi can't outdrag an MG Maestro.

Consequently, I have never gotten a speeding ticket, although I have gotten various other tickets from unmarked cars, eg noise violations for my exhaust, doing burnouts, posesssing a radar detector, etc. If you don't read up on where the traps are, you would loose your license pretty quickly around here...

Having said that, I drive as fast as I possibly can in most circumstances, routinely doing over 180kph. In fact, at least twice a week, go out after midnight or later and try and set a new record over a specified course in the city. If I new the distance, I could give you an average speed but I'm guessing something in excess of 150kph with speeds up to 240ish. As I said, I've never gotten a speeding ticket.

Yes but nobody actually does the limit Russ. There is an unwritten rule that you can do up to 25kph over the limit without getting a ticket and up to 40kph over on the highways in the fast lane. We don't have photo-radar either so the discretion is with the officers, as it should be...

It's 60 mph on what we call A roads (100kph), and 70mph on the motorway (freeway?) or any road with more than one lane in either direction, although if you're doing less than 85-90mph you'll be holding up the traffic! We have a hell of a lot of speed cameras though. If you want to get your kicks you're better off on the country lanes.

Here in the States, you go varying speeds on city streets, from 25mph (residential) to 50mph on some longish roads. Our average posted highway speed is 65-70mph, but you can generally go 80-90mph in most places. Certain other places, known to Bruce and I, you can go well above that

The fun is to be had on the country roads, as in very nice, twisty, country roads - no speed cameras (it would cost too much to install them) and hardly any police on a fair proportion of them. So many different types of bends to negotiate, grids right on the apex of some corners to miss otherwise they send a fair old shudder through your car, or in fact can 'kick' you off line if you're going fast enough, different cambers, different surfaces, roads that have lanes barely wider than your car which makes the perception of speed greater. Aye, that's the life!!

I believe you can, Mike, but not as in drive up to the race track and go on, like you can on the Nuburgring. Presumably, it has to be through organised clubs or something.

A resounding yes! It's one of the fastest (forgive the pun!) growing industries here. The track day is big business and probably keeps a lot of circuits in the black.

We have plenty of twisty roads as any other poster from Toronto will attest. My weekly race through the city takes me on some of the most scenic of these... I think you imagine Canada is a flat boring country with straight, deserted roads? This is perhaps true of some parts of the prairies but otherwise not

Absolutely not, Dan, as I have no idea of what the roads are like in Canada, so I would never make such an assumption!!

No, it was just a response to the highways comment - just merely stating that the fun is not to be had on the highways anyway, so there is no need to worry about the speed limit on them - save it all for the twisty roads!!
