bajo39 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 I've been to Compton a few times; once at night. Do not go at night. Yes, I expect it's a different story at night. I went during the day and ordered take-out from a Jack-in-the-Box that was better protected than Fort Knox... It was quite an experience.
pumpdoc 2 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 Well since I've become reformed in my thinking that America is the problem with the world, I'd like for all of you to tell me of the wonders of your great nations and why I should stay in my dark hole or see the light. Well people after afew days it's obvious that not many got my intent, that is to tell me why my country(America) is inferiour to yours. After all of the bashing that I've taken in the past couple of years about my country I wanted to know why yours was superiour ie: high wages, great oppertunity, low unemployment, great education etc. instead you have in typical Total F1 fashion dsanced all around the topic. Well fine I know that my country can't be beat on any scale, that's not a knock on anyones elses country but the facts bear this out, we have more oppertunitys to make a go of your chosen field, we have the lowest unenployment rate, the highest wages and the most personal freedom(UK excepted) of any nation/country. From now on you can bash us but I will snicker at your remarks because I know what is what in this world. The United States are not perfect but no one has shown me a better place to be or live......end of.....

I have travelled the US and having seen what it has to offer, I would still rather live here, in Canada. In fact, the US isn't even second on my list as that honour would belong to England. Don't take my opinion though, there are unbiased rankings of the best countries to live in which use objective measures such as life expectancy, standard of living and so on. One example is that produced by the UN. To my knowledge the US has never been at the top of these surverys, at least not in recent years. Usually, the scandinavian countries top the list along with Canada which is there or thereabouts.

Lure 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 The United States are not perfect but no one has shown me a better place to be or live......end of..... I think you need to travel outside the US more Pumpdoc. I can assure you there are plenty of better paces to live. We all love our home and I think Sydney's the best city in the world. Where I live I have 3 surf beaches within ten minutes drive, the worlds most beautiful harbour (so they say) also ten minutes away, the CBD just over that distance and the largest Shopping centre in the southern hemisphere just over the road. I think only New York & Paris beat Sydney in the top Cities of the world in the most recent Lonely Planet Guide. Here there are ample jobs for everyone, great produce and food, we have two of the worlds top 50 restaurants and the Sun shines way more often than not. The chicks are way hot too. In saying all that I would prefer to live in Tahiti, which is heaven on earth. American culture is well and truly embedded in Australia and we would watch more US entertainment than the local stuff. From this I have the notion that the majority of Americans are ignorant to the rest of the world. Very inwardly focused in my opinion. This is why you may find people from other regions with a perceived dislike of the US, I think this stems from the perceived ignorance to the rest of the world and arrogance that all thing in the States are better ( I think the later is natural but the former does annoy me somewhat). I don

cavallino 2 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 Well question for you lot, especially people who have travelled more than I have - which would be the best English speaking nation in the world to live in? Canada? Australia? UK? United States? Singapore!? One of the rich liberal Gulf States?

cavallino 2 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 For me for example speed limits and enforcement is a vital factor. Australia has one states where there are no speed limits on open roads, but they are going to introduce some soon Idiots Does Canada have speed limits everywhere?
monza gorilla 1 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 I assume so. Over here we are enemies of the state if we have the temerity to drive a car. But there are roads where you can indulge in a bit of proper driving if you know where to look. My favourite English speaking country is Scotland.

cavallino 2 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 is that really your first consideration about a country Probably not, but an important one I did get to drive on a decent road in Australia recently, where by some grave error, a nice and twisty bit of road had a speed limit of 100 kph. Of course, when you get to the straight part, the limit becomes

Yes we do have speed limits everywhere, but like most places ... people seldom follow them ..... myself included. Funny actually, seems like the limit is very arbitrary.... actually its almost an unwritten rule that its ok to go 10 -15 km over the posted limit... I rarely have seen the police pull over someone for going 10 - 15 km above the limit in alot of cases?

Of course, when you get to the straight part, the limit becomes 80 Well you would probably like many roads in the UK then, Cav - although the speed limit may be 60mph on country roads (as in twisty) here, it can be quite entertaining even at that speed, especially some of the more reknowned ones. For example, Wales is virtually full to bursting of great roads like that!!
cavallino 2 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 Yes we do have speed limits everywhere, but like most places ... people seldom follow them ..... myself included. How strict is the enforcement? Funny actually, seems like the limit is very arbitrary.... actually its almost an unwritten rule that its ok to go 10 -15 km over the posted limit... I rarely have seen the police pull over someone for going 10 - 15 km above the limit in alot of cases? Well in Oz 10 over is ok, but they will often pull you over for 15. And there are speed cameras which have even less leeway sometimes. Of course there are places where you'd rarely see cops - but then going about 30 over is such a heinous crime in the eye of the law, it is annoying if you have to worry about getting caught all the time when driving fast, takes the fun out of it. monza gorilla 1 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 I believe that in the UK a margin of 10% +2mph is used by the police. So in a 60mph limit you'll probably get away with up to 68mph . I've never tried it. But did get caught at 104mph in a 40mph limit some years ago. Didn't get away with that one.
